Maj. Gen. Essam el-Bedewey, said at least 28 people were killed and at least 25 were wounded when the attackers fired on the bus heading for the St. Samuel Monastery, one of several pilgrimage sites in an area that is home to a large portion of Egypt’s Christian population.

The Reuters news agency and other reports said children were among the dead.

A member of the region’s security department, Major Mohamed Abdel-Moneim, told reporters that about 10 men wearing military-style gear carried out the attack.

Last month, twin bomb blasts rocked churches in the Mediterranean port Alexandria and the northern city of Tanta, leaving 44 dead and prompting Egypt’s president, Abdel Fatah al-Sissi, to declare a state of emergency.

After the latest attack, Sissi called an emergency meeting of security officials, state-run media reported.

In late April, Pope Francis visited Egypt as part of Vatican outreach to Egypt’s embattled Christians, whose community dates back to the early centuries of the faith. But the papal trip also brought denunciations from Islamist militants and warnings of further reprisals.

In December, a bomb hit the main cathedral in Cairo, killing 25 people as part of what is being described as a new strategy by the Islamic State to target Christians.

Christians have been generally supportive of Sissi’s military-backed government, but have become increasingly critical of the country’s security forces inability to protect their places of worship.

“The state is doing its best, but we need more efforts,” Minya’s Coptic Bishop Makarios told The Washington Post. “They [security] are always present and on guard after the attack takes place, and keep their security measures tightened for a short while after … What we need is real effort exerted to ensure this is not repeated, not just solidarity and compassion.”

Looks like the Egyptian government has already been working on it, so that's good.

An Egyptian criminal court sentenced eight alleged Muslim Brotherhood members to death on Thursday for attacking a police station in 2015, local media reported.

The death sentence was passed by a court in Damanhur and requires the approval of the nation’s grand mufti, according to Egypt’s national newspaper Al-Ahram.

The suspects were accused of storming a police station and wounding an officer in the city of Damanhur northwest of Cairo. Charges also include acts of sabotage using explosives and firearms, and targeting security forces and state property.
i would have missed that..thanks very much for the link

Another day another Islamic terrorist attack.

They keep saying its only a small fraction of Muslims that are terrorists, and most are peaceful. If that's true, why do the madrassas and Mosques all around the middle east, keep preaching violence, wahhabism, and sharia law?

Do these things sound reasonable and like a small fraction?

Isn't that who Obummer supported after the Arab spring.

I'm hoping the talk that Trump & Sissi had while in S.A. will reap some reward here. Sissi appeared to be onboard with the consensus there fight any and all religious attacks. And, he vowed to go after whoever was responsible this time. ISIS has been the attacker in the past on the Coptic Christian community in Egypt. Whoever they were, I hope their days are numbered.

Sissi has declared fighting terrorism as his top priority.
Even more then improving the economy. He outlawed the EMB..

I agree it doesn't matter, but the EMB is more entrenched in Egyptian society

Almost like a 'deep state' sort of thing in the background trying to sabotage any change to their despicable beliefs and prevent the country's desire to get out from under their own ideological grip.

yes.in that's an entrenched power, but the Deep State is obviously legal.

Remember J. Edgar Hoover? where was his alliegance? to the FBI itself.
He had dirt on everybody, to use to ensure his power.

That's what's happening with DS.. it uses it's power for it's own aggrandizement

Alriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiighty then Sisi..................strike those sick demented perverts

Egypt bombs Islamic State targets in Libya after 21 Egyptians beheaded

Egyptian jets bombed Islamic State targets in Libya on Monday, a day after the group there released a video showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians, drawing Cairo directly into the conflict across its border.

Egypt said the pre-dawn strike hit militant camps, training sites and weapons storage areas in the neighbouring oil-producing country, where factional fighting has unleashed virtual anarchy and created havens for jihadi Islamists.
