Gun Industry Wants Legal Silencers Because It Hurts The Shooter's Ears. Aw. And Mass Shooters Will Love Silencers!

The U.S. gun industry is trying to shake off the Hollywood hitman image of the gun silencer and rebrand it as a hearing-protection device in a campaign to roll back regulations that date to the 1930s.

I won't use them because they can interfere with accuracy. Accuracy is very important when you're shooting squirrels and rabbits.

They're already legal you dumb mother fucker. They're encouraged in fucking England for God's sake.

Silencers are legal but are regulated by federal law and on a state-by-state basis. The National Firearms Act (NFA) branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) ultimately controls any transfers; this branch registers all silencers. Individuals, corporations, and trusts can legally purchase and possess silencers in 39 states. However, if you are an FFL dealer, manufacturer, peace officer, or member of a law enforcement agency or other government agency, there are additional states where you can own a silencer. Look at the map to see if you are eligible.

Guns save lives.

I'm just wondering why, logically, silencers are necessary if you're not a member of an elite tactical squad going in to take out Somali pirates in Mogadishu (for example)?

Is there a particular reason, legal or not, that you'd actually NEED a silencer?

Since guns are legally used for two purposes by the average citizen who could easily and more cheaply buy ear plugs or noise-reducing headsets (hunting or at the range), is there a logical reason to have one?

And no, "Because I can" is not a logical reason.

There's a typical reduction in recoil of around 30%, which increases accuracy and reduces firing fatigue on the person shooting. Firing an unsuppressed gun in a small closed area can permanently damage hearing due to the noise being reflected back at the shooter at close range; this can also disorient the person firing the weapon. Using a silencer significantly reduces this risk.

Why would you be against someone protecting their irreparable hearing? Do you even know how much a suppressor reduces noise to begin with?

I agree with all of the above except the accuracy part. In the two instances I have experienced firing a suppressed gun that I have also fired open bore I have found the suppressor actually made my gun less accurate. With a Ruger 22 pistol that I use for squirrel and rabbit hunting I can usually shoot a nickel to harder size group at 30 yards off of a bench. With the same pistol with a suppressor attached my group grows to the size of a half to silver dollar. Not much but when you're shooting at squirrels and rabbits it makes a difference. I have had a similar experience with a Glock 9mm.

How about because a gun is loud as hell and that a homeowner shouldn't have to ruin his ears just to take out a scumbag who has broken in and is trying to rape his daughter?

Asked and answered.

When a burglar is in your house raping your daughter, there isn't time to put the fucking ear plugs one before putting two rounds between his eyes.
And no, "Because I can" is not a logical reason.

How about because it is a RIGHT, thanks to the Second Amendment?
