Boston works through 3rd day without drinking water

BOSTON (Reuters) – More than 2 million Boston area residents faced their third day without drinkable tap water on Monday, with many commuters having to start their workweek without their customary cup of coffee or tea.

Authorities said they had repaired a leak in a 10-foot (3 meter) pipe that had triggered the emergency, but told residents and businesses of Boston and most surrounding communities they should continue to boil water before drinking it.

Nonetheless, state and city offices were open, as were schools and major area businesses including mutual-fund giants Fidelity Investments and State Street Corp, leaving area residents to drink bottled beverages and prompting many retailers to stop offering coffee, ice and salads.

"I was just in Starbucks trying to get my normal morning coffee and they said they weren't serving most of their menu," said Gareth Miller, 23, who was visiting Boston from Minneapolis, Minnesota. "It's inconvenient."

lol....my cousin, lives in a small town and of modest means, went to a large city with his wife for a date weekend. they bring their own wine, after checking into the hotel, he extracts the wine bottles from his luggage and promptly puts them in the mini bar fridge and knocks over every single mini bottle in the fridge in the process. needless to say, when they got their final bill.....the hotel actually sent a maid up there to verify their story

People used to drink alcoholic beverages instead of water on long journeys because it keeps better. Alcohol is a diuretic but I'm not sure what % alcohol you would need for you to actually be losing more water than you're gaining. Just to be on the safe side, pop out the everclear.

That's because you live in a place with shitty water. In contrast, eastern metro areas like NYC and Boston have some of the finest water sources in the world.

This is a major fuck-up for Boston. No contingency plan for a 10' water main?

The higher the proof, the more water your body uses. That's the reason that even though drinking will dehydrate you, your piss is very clear. Your body is trying to force the alcohol out.

Alcohol has other uses however. It's much less likely to be contaminated because alcohol kills everything. Except me of course.

Yeah, but with 2 million without water you had to know somebody that didn't shower for three days. I'll bet it smelled like NYC did when they kept reporting about the bad smell for three days.
