Got to love Obama...

Republicans defended Mitt Romney against criticism from Democrats that he avoided taxes by keeping money stashed overseas. Those roles are now reversed with the disclosure that President Barack Obama’s pick to run the Commerce Department does the same thing.

The nomination of Chicago billionaire Penny Pritzker marks the second time this year that Obama has put forth a cabinet nominee with offshore accounts -- months after he castigated Romney, the Republican presidential candidate, for utilizing them. In a financial disclosure released last week, Pritzker said she received $53.6 million in income last year from a trust in the Bahamas.

I can't wait to see all the Dems on here try and muster some faux outrage against Pritzker...

The funny thing is that Pritzker's tax returns will be given far more scrutiny for her to become Commerce Secretary than Mitt Romeny's were given to become the Commerce Secretary's boss.

Who really gives a shit about Commerce, though? It ought to be eliminated.

probably so...

why would you get rid of commerce? (the position, not saying actual commerce)

It's got too many disparate little functions and not overarching coherent purpose. Most of its budget is dedicated to the NOAA, which should be part of the Department of the Interior. There are a number of proposals to reorganize it. I haven't studied them all, but there's got to be a more sensible way to do things.

Fair enough... thanks... as for the last part... that can pretty much be said about every government agency. (though we may disagree on the definition of sensible)

So long as we don't call the Secretary of the new department the Secretary of Business, because lots of people hate that for some reason.

Businesses are the evilz... I thought they brainwashed all you left nutters with that... maybe you were sick that day?

Eh, more like folded into state.

I don't think State is appropriate for a lot of it, though (NOAA, BEA, Census, PTO, etc. . .). Send some to State, some to Interior, take what's left and add a few of the present independent agencies to it and create a new department (or call it Commerce). The current set up is whack.

Updating a previous item:

Chicago billionaire Penny Pritzker inadvertently understated a portion of her income by at least $80 million in a disclosure form required for her nomination to be U.S. Commerce secretary and has amended the document.

Forms released online last night by the Office of Government Ethics show that Pritzker earned additional income for consulting work on hundreds of trusts, including family trusts, beyond what she disclosed last week. The omission, discovered by Pritzker’s financial advisers, was due to a clerical error, said Susan Anderson, the nominee’s spokeswoman.

“It is a substantial amount and we moved to correct the mistake as soon as it was discovered,” Anderson said in an e-mailed statement.

Completely understandable. Happened to me last week. Mine was a clerical error, too.

I'd agree to most of that. In fact, I'm stealing that idea for my manifesto.
