Gordon Brown claims the West 'failed' to stand up to Vladimir Putin for years

All the bullshit, and it is bullshit, about Putin having changed is specious bollocks. He's always been ruthless and a psychopath.

‘I was under no illusions about what Putin was like,’ the former Prime Minister said in an interview this weekend.

Recalling a 2006 visit to the Kremlin while Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Brown said: ‘I was put in a very low seat so that I was looking up at him. He’s certainly a relatively small man, and he wears these stacked heels.

Anyway, that day he took out these index cards, and proceeded to read out all this information he had about me, as though he wanted to prove that he knew more about me than I knew about myself. So when people say that Putin’s changed and is only now threatening, I can tell you that he was threatening me even then.’

Mr Brown believes Putin only responds to ‘an uncompromising and unyielding show of strength,’ adding: ‘The only thing Putin understands is strength. Weakness he will exploit; he’s opportunistic to the nth degree.’

And he warned that the West’s inaction over Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea, which took place while David Cameron was Prime Minister, ‘allowed Putin to think he might get away with further incursions’.

The comments came as Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky yesterday visited troops in a bunker on the frontline of the southern Mykolaiv region.

Despite Russian advances in eastern Ukraine, Mr Zelensky said: ‘Our brave men. Each one of them is working flat out. We will definitely hold out! We will definitely win.’

Western-supplied heavy weapons are reaching front lines, although not in quantities that Ukrainian officials say are needed to push back Russian forces.

Fuck off, cunt!

Mr Zelensky said: ‘Our brave men. Each one of them is working flat out. We will definitely hold out! We will definitely win.’
doesn't look like it. Maybe yet MORE NATO top weapons might do it
Personally I think Zelensky should drop the invincible Ukrainian forces bit.
They are losing a lot of men

Ukraine likely lacks the combat power to expel Russia from all of its territory, and the momentum on the battlefield is shifting in Russia’s favor. The longer this conflict continues, the greater the death and destruction, the more severe the disruptions to the global economy and the food supply, and the higher the risk of escalation to full-scale war between Russia and NATO. Transatlantic unity is starting to fray, with France, Germany, Italy and other allies uneasy about the prospect of a prolonged war — especially against the backdrop of rising inflation.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists, not surprisingly, that “victory will be ours” and urges Ukrainians to “defend every meter of our land.” And Biden, even as he makes mention of the need for diplomacy, has so far been unwilling to caution Kyiv against those aims, instead affirming “I will not pressure the Ukrainian government — in private or public — to make any territorial concessions.” “We’re not going to tell the Ukrainians how to negotiate, what to negotiate and when to negotiate,” Colin Kahl, the undersecretary of defense for policy, reiterated this week. “They’re going to set those terms for themselves.”

But Washington has not only a right to discuss war aims with Kyiv, but also an obligation. This conflict arguably represents the most dangerous geopolitical moment since the Cuban missile crisis. A hot war is raging between a nuclear-armed Russia and a NATO-armed Ukraine, with NATO territory abutting the conflict zone. This war could define the strategic and economic contours of the 21st century, possibly opening an era of militarized rivalry between the world’s liberal democracies and an autocratic bloc anchored by Russia and China.

These stakes necessitate direct U.S. engagement in determining when and how this war ends. Instead of offering arms with no strings attached — effectively leaving strategy up to the Ukrainians — Washington needs to launch a forthright discussion about war termination with allies, with Kyiv, and ultimately, with Moscow.

he claim that Vladimir Putin will end his trouble-making only if he is decisively defeated in Ukraine is another fallacious argument that distorts debate and stands in the way of diplomacy. Writing in The Atlantic, Anne Applebaum calls for the “humiliation” of Putin and insists that “the defeat, sidelining, or removal of Putin is the only outcome that offers any long-term stability in Ukraine and the rest of Europe.” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin wants to weaken Russia “to the degree that it can’t do the kinds of things that it has done in invading Ukraine.”

But this is wishful thinking, not strategic sobriety. Putin is poised to remain in power for the foreseeable future. He will be a troublemaker no matter how this war ends; flexing his geopolitical muscle and burnishing his nationalist credentials are the primary sources of his domestic legitimacy. Furthermore, humiliating Putin is risky business; he could well be more reckless with his back up against the wall than if he can claim victory by taking another bite out of Ukraine. The West has learned to live with and contain Putin for the past two decades — and will likely continue to have to do so into the next.

War in Ukraine could last for years, Nato chief says
https://www.theguardian.com/world/l...ports-tough-battles-near-sievierodonetsk-live
The head of Nato has warned that the war in Ukraine could go on “for years” as president Volodymyr Zelensky vowed Sunday that his forces would not give up the south of the country to Russia after his first visit to the frontline there.

While Ukraine remained defiant, Nato secretary general Jens Stoltenberg warned Western countries must be ready to offer long-term support to Kyiv.

“We must be prepared for this to last for years,” Stoltenberg told German daily newspaper Bild.

We must not weaken in our support of Ukraine, even if the costs are high - not only in terms of military support but also because of rising energy and food prices.”

Putin has lost over a quarter of his armed forces, huge numbers of tanks, APCs, artillery, aircraft and rocket launchers. Putin should have been confronted when he attacked Crimea but Obama was too weak to draw some redlines and keep to them. Do you think JFK, Reagan or Trump would have done that?

Obama and BIDEN should have caused Russia more pain when Russia took Crimea. Trump would have Twisted Germany and Frances arms to actually provide the arms that they have promised.

That was the Kyiv offensive, it was a disaster for Russia, Donbas is being pulverized inch by inch
Trump most definately would not give them MASSIVE AMOUNTS of NATO advnaced weapons after Crimea..Congress forced it

The best thing about Trump is he didn't wNt to get sucked into foreign wars -this is Europes war
let them take the lead..Biden is a fool, driving us into grocery shortages and high fuel prices.

While China and India get cheap oil

Russia is about to lose up to 90% of its oil exports to Europe.

Yes, I can agree that he'd have done his best to stop war occurring. However he'd also have drawn red lines and acted accordingly if breached.
