Electric-vehicle sales are seeing continued strength globally with China reporting record monthly sales in October, according to market research firm Rho Motion.
EV sales in China, the world's largest auto market, increased 29% year-to-date in September. The global EV market showed 34% growth in the same period.

China is entering the final two months of the year which are seasonally high for vehicle sales, according to Rho Motion.
"What's notable about October's figures is that EV demand in China continues to reach record highs ... 2023 is set to be another banner year for China in terms of EV sales," the market research firm said.
EV sales grew 26% in European markets, according to Rho Motion.

EV sales in North America were up 78% so far this year.
"The North American market continues to have a strong 2023, with Tesla still taking the lion's share of demand" Rho Motion said.

TESLA’S NEW CAR IS EXPECTED TO BE ITS CHEAPEST MODEL YET — HERE’S WHEN YOU CAN GET THE BUDGET-FRIENDLY EV

Tesla Motors says it is gearing up to launch its first low-cost EV.

Tesla Motors says it is gearing up to launch its first truly low-cost electric vehicle (EV), unofficially referred to as the Model 2. Expected to debut in 2024, the budget EV will come with an MSRP between $25,000 to $30,000 — making it one of the lowest-priced EV models to hit the U.S. market.*
Currently, Tesla’s most affordable car is the Model 3, which now starts with an MRSP of around $39,000.
Tesla’s Model 2 is expected to be a hatchback, with the company offering options and upgrades similar to those available for its mid-priced cars and trucks — such as battery upgrades and service subscriptions.

While Tesla manufactures its more expensive cars in the U.S., the affordable EV is likely to be manufactured primarily at Tesla’s forthcoming factory in Monterrey, Mexico, with some production potentially also taking place at its facility in Austin, Texas.*
Tesla uses a vertical integration strategy —*designing its own batteries, software, and equipment, which helps control costs.*
Plus, Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, told investors during the company’s March 1 investor day event that the Mexican factory choice — along with the use of larger, flat batteries that double as the car’s floor — will help to streamline the EV assembly and reduce costs by as much as 65%.

Battery breakthrough brings ‘unprecedented performance’ to next-gen cells

Sodium-ion batteries could soon be found in everything from smartphones to wind farms
A battery breakthrough made by researchers in Japan could pave the way for next-generation batteries to finally enter mass production.
A team from Tokyo University of Science discovered a way to build sodium-ion batteries with an equivalent performance to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion, or li-ion, batteries are found in everything from electric cars to smartphones, however they are made from difficult-to-extract and expensive resources, while also containing liquid electrolytes that are toxic and flammable.
By contrast, sodium-ion batteries are cheaper, offer stability against extreme temperatures, and pose no risk of overheating. Until now, their main limitation has been a lower energy density compared to li-ion batteries.
To overcome this limitation, the scientists developed a high-capacity electrode made from nanostructured hard carbon, which they were able to optimise and then incorporate into an actual battery.

Breakthrough solar system outperforms military-grade diesel generator
The researchers said the new electrodes deliver “unprecedented performance” and offer a viable option for producing next-generation batteries for consumer electronics and electric vehicles.
“This value is equivalent to the energy density of certain types of currently commercialised lithium-ion batteries... and is more than 1.6 times the energy density of the first sodium-ion batteries, which our laboratory reported back in 2011,” said Professor Shinichi Komaba from Tokyo University of Science.
The breakthrough could also make sodium-ion batteries viable for other practical applications, such as low carbon footprint energy storage systems for solar and wind farms.

Exxon wants to drill enough lithium out of Arkansas to power 1M EVs per year

https://apple.news/Azfhoa6XdSLKRpfq6VcMjCA

Fossil fuel giant Exxon is betting its U.S. lithium operation will power a new generation of electric cars.

The U.S. has hundreds of thousands of tons of “recoverable” lithium, which could go to use in batteries for cars, handhelds and renewable energy storage, a 2021 U.S. Geological Survey said. Yet, the country has just one commercial-scale lithium mining site today, in Nevada — run by chemical manufacturer Albemarle.
The Biden administration is pushing for more lithium mines, despite opposition from indigenous and environmental groups, and now Exxon is committing to drilling it out of the ground in Arkansas. In doing so, Exxon is potentially challenging Tesla — which is working on extracting lithium from clay in Texas — as well as numerous tech startups. Lilac Solutions, for example, wants to extract lithium from the Great Salt Lake in Utah. There’s also GM-backed EnergyX, which raised $50 million in April to “unlock” lithium in North America.
Exxon stated on Monday that it aims to start producing lithium in 2027. It said it’s talking with “potential customers” such as electric vehicle and battery makers. By the start of the next decade, Exxon said it intends to produce “enough lithium to supply the manufacturing needs of well over a million EVs per year.”

EV sales jumped 50 percent in Q3 2023

https://arstechnica.com/cars/2023/10/tesla-is-losing-market-share-as-ev-adoption-grows-and-prices-fall/

For such a car-centric nation, it's a little depressing that the US lags behind the European Union and China when it comes to electric vehicle adoption. Without a large investment to redesign our towns and cities to make them walkable and accessible via public transport, switching en masse to electric cars is the main remaining avenue left to decarbonize our transport, after all. So it is rather encouraging to see signs that more US car buyers are opting to go electric, as sales have climbed 50 percent, year on year, as uptake reaches almost 8 percent.

According to Kelly Blue Book, US car buyers bought 313,086 battery EVs between the months of July and September 2023, compared to just 209,030 BEVs for the same three months of last year.
