A search is under way in the woods near Petty Creek and Wagon Mountain west of Lolo for a man who led Missoula County sheriff's deputies on a chase and shot at them.
The suspect is David Bergert, who is on federal and state probation and was part of the Project 7 militia in the Flathead County area.
At about 11:50 a.m. Sunday, deputies were attempting to check on a person in a vehicle near the Fort Fizzle Historic Site Picnic Area five miles west of Lolo on U.S. Highway 12 when the person fled.
The chase ended near Wagon Mountain and the Lumberjack Saloon, when Bergert pulled over his Jeep, stepped out of the vehicle, and calmly began shooting at sheriff's deputies.
Bergert was stopped earlier in the week for a moving violation, and said “he wasn’t going to be taken down like last time,” and it would “take a SWAT team” to bring him in, according to Missoula County Undersheriff Mike Dominick.
Bergert is 6 feet 2 inches tall and 230 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.
He was last seen wearing a bluish shirt and a fanny pack, and is believed to be armed with a handgun and possibly a rifle.

It was a small, obscure militia called Project 7, and according to local investigators, its members were stockpiling weapons and plotting mass murder as part of a plan to make Flathead County, Mont., the flash point for world revolution.
First, they would murder local police, judges and prosecutors.
When the National Guard came in, they would kill as many troops as they could.
When the U.S. government turned to NATO for help, they would take up arms against the forces of the New World Order.
