Former White House Adviser Says Trump Could Lead to 'Death' of Democracy in America

Former White House advisor David Gergen warned of the end of democracy if President Donald Trump continues to lie while whipping his power all over America’s laws.

“He’s as dismissive of truth as he is ethics,” said the advisor to multiple presidents across parties. “We could go on and on with this. One thing [that] was striking this week was a story on yesterday’s front page in the New York Times about the leader of Turkey who is giving speeches like this every day, two or three on national television. He pays no attention to facts.

He maintains about 40 percent approval rating. Guess who else has about 40 percent? Donald Trump. It’s a device that works up to a point. I’m sad to say it can lead to the diminishment of democracy if not its death.”

CNN host Anderson Cooper followed up, asking if Gergen “really believes” it could lead to the end of democracy.

“Yes, I do,” he replied.

“This book that’s out now called How Democracies Die is worth reading. It’s short and makes compelling points about how many [democratic countries] have become authoritarian countries and it’s happened again and again. In the last 20 years or so, it’s happened again and again when extremists come to office and carry their countries in that direction. When you don’t have the kind of restraint that a democracy needs, you can erode it badly. I think it’s becoming a threat. We’re not there by any means, but it is a threat. If we had this president and a couple more like him, I think we would be very close.”

Former advisor to Barack Obama, David Axelrod, noted that he too is “deeply concerned about democracy,” not merely because of Trump’s behavior but the ways in which he is degrading democratic institutions.

This book that’s out now called How Democracies Die is worth reading. It’s short and makes compelling points about how many [democratic countries] have become authoritarian countries and it’s happened again and again. In the last 20 years or so, it’s happened again and again when extremists come to office and carry their countries in that direction. When you don’t have the kind of restraint that a democracy needs, you can erode it badly. I think it’s becoming a threat. We’re not there by any means, but it is a threat. If we had this president and a couple more like him, I think we would be very close.”

Comparing Trump and Erdogan, two points come to mind: Erdogan is a smart operator and he has a much weaker democratic tradition to deal with. Trump's position is the exact opposite. No doubt he would quite like to subvert the democratic process, and some of his supporters would go along with it, but he doesn't have what it takes.

He could still do some damage to political discourse, though, as he has already damaged America's reputation, with his constant idiotic lying and blustering. It depends how long he's around.

It is correct. Democracy is a lot more fragile than people think. The right is taking over the media. In much of America there is only one message, far right hate that makes the masses think they are getting cheated. by left wing plots. Trump is going after the press and the courts with his extreme rhetoric. The low info masses are buying it. Trump has no respect for our institutions. He wants control over the FBI and secret service, Sorry, but Trump is a real and serious threat.

I am thankful that people like David Gergen and David Axelrod are speaking out so plainly on the danger to our Republic from this abomination in the Oval Office. Anyone who supposes for a moment that Donald Trump would not jump at a chance for dictatorship...is a fool.

In any case, the damage this abomination is doing to our institutions is something we will have to live with for generations. The path he has set upon will not be set straight again in short order.

I am particularly disgusted that so many of our fellow citizens are unable to see this cancer for what it is. Donald Trump IS an abomination. His enablers do not even meet that standard.

TIME for the Republican party to step up and pace country over party


if they don't the party will die

Americans will take to the streets in numbers so large the country come to a stop until and theassholes wont be able to make the money they thought they would.

Trump has publicly lamented that he doesn't have absolute control over Justice and the FBI. He doesn't know enough about government to know that Justice has always been independent.

Meanwhile, Trump is marginalizing Kelly.. He won't be around much longer.. The WH is an ethics cesspool.

where do you see Trump wanting "absolute control"- give an ex. please.
He's urged Sessions to do his job - many of us have. The FBI scandal shows Trump was correct they are out to get him

Do you understand the FISA abuse -using the steele dossier for example is against FBI proceedure where by only "verified"info can be used -did they tell you that?


Have they reported the delays and stonewalling from DoJ on getting a clean copy of the "founding document"

The other day the fact Mueller said Trump is not a target was laughed at my LS news.
That was a BIG development -not depositive yet- but they treated it the same as if he were a target
