Finland turns down US request for eggs

FAGATS sure are stupid.

Finland's capacity to supply eggs to the US is limited by its domestic production and the scale of the US egg shortage. Finland has approximately 4 million laying hens, according to the head of the Finnish Poultry Association. While exact egg production figures can vary, a typical laying hen produces around 300 eggs per year under optimal conditions. This suggests Finland’s total annual egg production could be roughly 1.2 billion eggs (4 million hens × 300 eggs per hen).

However, Finland is self-sufficient in egg production and only exports small amounts, with no established export agreement with the US. In 2023, Finland exported $21.2 million worth of eggs, primarily to nearby countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Latvia, equating to about 15,963 tonnes (or roughly 266 million eggs, assuming an average egg weight of 60 grams). This indicates that only a fraction of its production—perhaps 20-25%—is available for export after meeting domestic needs.
