Chinese balloon spotted over the Pee Dee, Grand Strand
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — A Chinese balloon drifting above the U.S. was seen in the Pee Dee and Grand Strand Saturday.
So what exactly is this balloon?
The Pentagon confirmed that it is a surveillance balloon but not much else is known about it.
It was first spotted in the West, but by Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, it was seen over northern Missouri.
The balloon is estimated to be 60,000 feet in altitude. The wind is much stronger at that level of the atmosphere than at Earth's surface.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for parts of North Carolina and South Carolina.
All operations at Charleston, Myrtle Beach and Wilmington are paused until 2:45 p.m. for national security initiatives.
The Biden administration said they are considering a plan to shoot it down once it is above the Atlantic Ocean where the remnants could potentially be recovered, according to four U.S. officials.
