A new state law will allow police to arrest people who don’t leave town under mandatory evacuation orders.

As it stands, officials cannot compel people to evacuate, only warn that those who stay behind won’t have any emergency services at their disposal. The new law gives county judges and mayors the power to authorize use of “reasonable force” to remove people from the area.

The law, passed this year, takes effect Sept. 1, in the heart of hurricane season in Texas. It also applies to other disasters, such as fires or floods.

Don’t expect police to go door to door arresting people or forcing them from their homes if a hurricane is headed toward Corpus Christi.

“If the hurricane is arriving here, we’re going to be doing the best we can to hunker things down, to make sure we have as many special-needs patients evacuated, to prevent crime and looting,” Corpus Christi Police Cmdr. Mark Schauer said. “We’re going to have a hard enough time preventing crime, let alone arresting people who don’t leave.”

One thing I have not seen discussed in the media, and I find its omission to be interesting, is that in certain parts of this country, say Idaho, a white man will shoot to death any law enforcement agent who steps foot on his property. He will have learned from right wing hero, G gordon Liddy, to go for "headshots" in order to avoid being stymied by bullet-proof vests, and the white property owner would be cheered on and hailed as a hero by many on the right including most of talk radio.

Any idea why that's not the case with Gates?

In October 1996, E. Michael Kahoe, Chief of the FBI's Violent Crimes and Major Offenders Section, was charged with, and later pleaded guilty to, obstruction of justice charges relating to his destruction of an FBI "After Action Critique" on the Ruby Ridge matter.

FBI destruction of evidence. The first victim was 14 year old Sam weaver, SHOT IN THE BACK when the FBI opened fire! Vicky weaver was later assassinated by Lon Horiuchi shot while holding her infant in her arms....

This isn't just about me. This is about how most Texans view their property rights and the non-authority that law enforcement would have in evacuating them mandatorily.

What a crock of shit. Shooting cops would not get the guy hailed as a hero to many on the right and most certainly not on talk radio.

As for Gates, my guess is that racist has heard the tape of his conversation with the cop and that is why he wants to suddenly play nice and 'move on' from this experience.

I'm not interested enough in what you in particular think about Gates to go searching through your posts. But I know I have scored a point here that he right doesn't want to address because anytime I have brought it up, especially the right wing hero G Gordon Liddy's words, they've run like hell. :)

You are aware that G Gordon Liddy advised, on his talk radio show, people to shoot ATF agents "in the head" so that they weren't protected from death by their bullet proof vests, aren't you? If not, let me school you once again, I know it's been a long time SF, and you must have missed being schooled.

Of course they would have hailed the white guy.

Liddy claimed that his detractors omit some important context:

“I was talking about a situation in which law enforced agents comes smashing into a house, doesn't say who they are, and their guns are out, they're shooting, and they're in the wrong place. This has happened time and time again. The ATF has gone in and gotten the wrong guy in the wrong place. The law is that if somebody is shooting at you, using deadly force, the mere fact that they are a law enforcement officer, if they are in the wrong, does not mean you are obliged to allow yourself to be killed so your kinfolk can have a wrongful death action. You are legally entitled to defend yourself and I was speaking of exactly those kind of situations. If you're going to do that, you should know that they're wearing body armor so you should use a head shot. Now all I'm doing is stating the law, but all the nuances in there got left out when the story got repeated.
