With 90% of Americans supported expanded background checks, is it obvious our Congress doesn't represent the people but the NRA?

WASHINGTON -- The Senate failed to muster sufficient support Wednesday for a gun-buyer background check bill that's supported by nearly 90 percent of Americans, voting the measure down in a procedural vote that likely dooms any major legislation to curb gun violence.

The measure -- painstakingly crafted by the bipartisan duo of Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) -- was seen as the key to passing the first legislation in decades to address the sorts of mass slaughters that so recently horrified the country in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six educators were gunned down at an elementary school, and in Auroro, Colo., where 12 people were killed in a theater.

The amendment failed 54 to 46, falling short of the 60-vote threshold needed to break a filibuster of the measure, even as victims of the Sandy Hook shootings and other shooting watched from the Senate gallery and activists at a vigil outside the Capitol read the names of people slain since then, hoping to prompt action.

Out of those 90% of Americans... how many were misled as to the extent background checks are actually used already?

Can you tell us what percent of legal gun sales (ball park) go through a background check?

Can you tell me why any of this matters one iota?
 
It's just that I don't see how the fact that most gun sales are subject to background checks has any relevance to whether more gun sales should be subject to background checks.

I know 74% of NRA members also support background checks. Who misled them? And can you tell me "the extent background checks are actually used already"?

I'm more concerned with the number that don't in deals made on Craigslist and the hallways of gun shows.

Private transfer is legal, and most private sellers i know of follow the law to the letter. I just bought a shotgun, from a pawn shop, it took 3 days for my background check to go through. The puzzle pieces are in place. They just need to be arranged properly. Law abiding citizens are not the problem. Criminals will get a gun anyway possible. They don't obey the law as it is and the law abiding citizen gets punished.

Buying a gun at a pawn shop is not a private sale. But you're right...criminals will get a gun. All they have to do is wander the hallways at gun shows or check Craigslist.

Your correct and i didn't clarify properly. Pawn shop sales are public. I live in south Carolina ill dig deep into private sale statutes and post findings at some point.

We need uniform national laws. We don't need criminals crossing borders to buy guns under less strict laws.

While i understand your perspective, I'm going to respectfully state that our government needs to stop things like fast and furious. We handed the criminals the guns then lost them. The government needs to demonstrate responsiblity then maybe the people will adjust their behavior. This administration can't blame enough people or distract enough from the real issue that spending is out of control.
