Eric Holder has admitted that Edward Snowden helped the country by leaking classified documents detailing the government's surveillance program on its own citizens. But the former U.S. Attorney General says that doesn't mean Snowden should be exempt from the law. Snowden has been living in exile in Russia since he leaked thousands of pages of documents detailing the National Security Agency's surveillance program in 2013. President Barack Obama has said time and time again that if Snowden returns to American soil, he will be punished to the full extent of the law. In an interview with David Axelrod on CNN podcast The Axe Files, Holder admitted some sympathy for Snowden.

I doubt that he would get a fair trial as he would not be able to enter a public interest plea as mitigation. Obama has already made it clear what he wants.

'I've already said from the very first moment that if the government was willing to provide a fair trial, if I had access to public interest defenses and other things like that, I would want to come home and make my case to the jury,' Snowden said. 'But, as I think you're quite familiar, the Espionage Act does not permit a public interest defense. You're not allowed to speak the word 'whistleblower' at trial.
