march 19 2026 The sale of crossbows is to be banned in England and Wales in response to a triple murder and other crimes involving the weapons.

Ministers are to introduce a law to enact the ban on sales, with a consultation on how and when it will be implemented. People who own crossbows already will need to apply for a licence and may need police checks to keep them legally.
One case that prompted the plans is that of Kyle Clifford, who used a crossbow during the murders of three women in Hertfordshire in July 2024.

Clifford, 27, a former soldier, used a website to buy a crossbow, six bolts and a cocking device to make it easier to fire, all for £350. His victims were the wife and daughters of John Hunt, the BBC commentator.

The Home Office cited the murders in its response to its consultation on crossbow restrictions. It said the Government was concerned about how easily available the weapons were and their use “to commit murders and other serious criminal offences”.
