Empty ‘Pledge to America’

Even by the standards of current political rhetoric, the Republicans’ new campaign manifesto, “The Pledge to America,” is disingenuous. But it might well work in the short run because many voters would prefer to express simple anger than to look at the arithmetic (and lack thereof) of this carefully vague package. Such rhetoric is so much more soothing than fiscal reality.

The Pledge would fight waste, freeze the hiring of federal employees and cut back all “discretionary spending” to 2008 levels. Naturally, it promises to protect programs that assist the elderly, who vote a lot — to protect their benefits. Of course, military spending would continue to surge. And, congressional Republicans’ greatest love, all the Bush tax cuts, would roll on. And so the deficits would continue to swell. This is not a fiscally “conservative” document.

Most federal spending consists of Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid and military spending. The rest, “discretionary spending,” includes such things as National Parks (maybe just sell them off to Donald Trump?), the National Science Foundation, health-related stuff, the Small Business Administration, college scholarships and transportation and other public infrastructure (now the most decayed in the developed world) and so on.

We suspect that many folks don’t realize what “discretionary” means.

And, sorry, while government (and private-sector) waste, fraud and inefficiency are problems, and should be rooted out, they account for a small percentage of total federal government costs.

The Pledge carefully avoids saying which “waste” or “discretionary spending” the party would cut because even many of its “anti-big-government” zealots benefit from these programs. The exception is a specific promise to get rid of the rest ($16 billion) of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) — that unpopular Panic of 2008 creature from Wall Street’s dark lagoon.

We recall the rage of some elderly opposing any changes to the out-of-control Medicare, the most “socialist” part of our health-care “system,” while fighting the “socialism” involved in extending such coverage to the uninsured.

There are, it is true, a couple of reasonable ideas in this alluring collection of generally fiscally illogical pronouncements. For instance, the government should indeed with all deliberate speed get out of the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac swamps! And something needs to be done about reducing the outrageous lawsuits that drive up medical costs.

But all in all, this Pledge is a remarkably dishonest attempt to gain power from a recession-weary electorate wherein the middle class continues to shrink as the very rich get richer. It might work on Nov. 2, though the GOP would then, after the election, have to deal with voter rage itself if programs that the public has come to see as essential parts of government are slashed and the deficit still swells.

The most serious thing in The Pledge is the desire to regain power at almost any cost.

Aint it the truth. The devil is in the details and they sure as hell don't want to provide any, do they?

Kind of like running a campaign that runs away from the Health Care Mandate, The Stimulus plan, Cap and Trade, Raising Taxes and your own party leader the President. Whats the campaign stratagy and mantra? The opposition is the party of "No" , hate and racists ... and use homophobic rhetoric like calling your opposition "Tea Baggers"

To sit here and ramble on about fiscal responsibility whilst in the midst of an out of control Government that is pouring billions of dollars into transparent pork projects, congressional buyoffs and misdirected stimulus is a complete joke. Think before you open your trap and mouth the words fiscal responsibility.

McCain On 'Black Monday': Fundamentals Of Our Economy Are Still Strong

First Posted: 09-15-08
...despite modest growth and relatively low unemployment rates, many economists see dire signs in today's economic landscape. On Sunday, former fed chairman Alan Greenspan said the market was the worst he had ever witnessed and predicted another major bank would close soon. Meanwhile, inflation is rising, real wages are declining, and the problems in the housing market persist.

McCain acknowledged, to various degrees, these topics in his Monday morning speech.

"I promise you we will never put America in this position again," McCain said. "This is a failure.

From Obama...Today of all days, John McCain's stubborn insistence that the 'fundamentals of the economy are strong' shows that he is disturbingly out of touch with what's going in the lives of ordinary Americans. Even as his own ads try to convince him that the economy is in crisis, apparently his 26 years in Washington have left him incapable of understanding that the policies he supports have created an historic economic crisis."

McCain adviser talks of 'mental recession'
July 9, 2008

(Phil Gramm, a former senator and top economic policy adviser)... We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline" despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

"We've never been more dominant; we've never had more natural advantages than we have today," he said. "We have benefited greatly" from the globalization of the economy in the last 30 years."

What planet does he live on???

Since Republicons refuse to take responsibility for the disastrous effects their policies have on this country, why should we even consider giving them power again? 30 years of outsourcing, wage stagnation, government manipulation for private profit, recession, wars, lying about the economy and your leaders calling Americans 'whiners' should be enough for anyone with half a brain, or a little pride, to realize these guys don't give a shit about this country.
Then you turn around and bitch and become obstructionists when someone want's to try to fix some of the problems you caused. Anything to protect the profits of your multinational corporate sponsors. This is nothing but the same old 'Plague on America' you always offer.

Somehow all the neocon / libertarian faux patriots have come to believe that destroying america on behalf of multinational corporations is some great example of freedom and patriotism. They are so freaking brainwashed. It's quite saddening.

Yeah...what is this all about?

The 'Tea Party' is largely comprised of a peculiar species known as A. ignotus.

A. ignotus makes its home primarily south of the Mason-Dixon line. It is commonly called the "red-neck", however, this term has fallen out of use with scientists, who now prefer the gentler-sounding "ruby-throated".

A. ignotus typically has a porky build, and it is the second largest species of Americanus, often mistaken for the normal obese Americanus by inexperienced American-watchers.

Its preferred foods include squirrel, rattlesnake, vittles (whatever the hell those are), and fried chicken.

In times of scarcity, they have been known to eat children, though as a testament to their family values, they never eat their own children, only others'.

Such Americans are of little threat without additional armaments, as their teeth are generally missing due to drunken Nascar-induced fistfights, and their drug-induced crazes usually preclude any consistent muscle movement.

Travelers through the habitat of the ruby-throated American should take caution, however, as this type of American is known to favor shotguns, oceans of cheap lager, and large dogs (as well as other instruments traditional to the mating practices of the ruby-throated American) to defend its territory.

Ruby-throats have developed a primitive language, though scientists have yet to decode its meaning.

The ruby-throated American mainly inhabits trailer parks, although it may also be observed in the ugly part of any suburban neighborhood.

The species can be identified by its prominent display of the Confederate flag.

These flags serve to warn predators that the ruby-throated American's flesh is poisonous.

Anyone who eats one will suffer excruciating indigestion, acid-reflux, and cancer.

This variety of American seldom thinks independently, and tends to accept everything its leaders say as fact without question.

Warning: The ruby-throated American is simultaneously the most dangerous and the most ignorant kind of American. It is a danger to itself and others, but mostly to gays, Jews, blacks, liberals, and you.

The 'Tea Party' purports to represent a subspecies of Americanus, A. mediocres.

Another prevalent subspecies, A. mediocres (common name "middle-class Americanus" or just "middle Americanus"), mainly inhabits spawling, ill-planned suburbs, although it can be spotted migrating to warmer parts of the planet during weekends and on bank holidays.

A. mediocres, like its cousin A. fatassus, eats fast food, but it also eats building society loans, mortgages, and millions of useless consumer products made in China.

Unlike the richer variations of Americanus, the middle-class Americanus does not store money for the economic wintertime, preferring to eat its money now rather than later.

As a result of such poor financial management, middle Americanus are the first to start whining whenever the economic wintertime begins or interest rates go up.

The middle-class Americanus is also the most docile Americanus, and is easily herded in any particular direction.

It is this habit of the middle-class that causes some to believe that A. mediocres evolved from lemmings, a theory supported by cases of politicians driving it en masse over cliffs.

However, this theory was disproven when genetic tests tied them to a type of cow.

Even aside from the genetic evidence, it is debatable whether the middle-class Americanus "evolved" from lemmings, as it is clearly a de-evolution since Americanus is actually dumber than a lemming.
