EDF poised to cut nuclear power output as French rivers get too warm

The French energy supplier EDF has signalled it is likely to reduce output at its nuclear power stations on the Rhône and Garonne rivers as heatwaves push up river temperatures, restricting its ability to use the river water to cool the plants.

More heat is forecast in the coming days, with air temperatures of above 35C. The heatwave has led to lower water levels in the Rhône and Garonne rivers and raised the water temperature.

Under French rules, EDF must reduce or halt nuclear output when river temperatures reach certain thresholds to ensure the water used to cool the plants will not harm the environment when it is released back into the rivers.

And there's me thinking they were concerned about the rivers' wildlife.

Haw, haw................................haw.

One of the problems with nuclear power is it creates a huge amount of hot water. With time and money, you can make infrastructure to take care of that, but no one thought it would get so hot in France so often.

:whoa:

28 of their 56 nuke plants have already been shut down for months. They've been burning coal since January.

So nuke plants don't work in hot weather? ... great :palm:

There are only two types of pollution from nuclear plants, used fuel, and hot water/steam. Hot water/steam is not a big deal usually, but can cause trouble in some situations. That being said, the nuclear plant still works fine, if you are willing to heat the river to a point where all the fish die. It is a judgement call.

Let me say it like this, Europeans will shutoff the nuclear plant, and save the fish. Chinese, or Russians will just kill the fish.

Piss poor planning. Weren't they built in anticipation of predicted warming? and ...

Did you forget about the construction of nuke plants and pollution from mining of Uranium (a limited resource)?

Are you going to ignore that half France's nuke plants are shut down for unscheduled 'maintenance'?
