Just days after the state’s largest Muslim civil-rights group asked law-enforcement officials to explain why they’d refused to send extra security to the Fort Pierce mosque linked to Orlando shooter Omar Mateen, the attack of a worshipper there has become the basis for what could be a U.S. Department of Justice complaint.
St. Lucie County sheriff’s deputies have arrested Taylor Anthony Mazzanti, 25, on felony battery charges in the attack that landed the victim in the hospital, where he was treated and released Saturday for a barrage of blows.
“He said, ‘You Muslims need to go back to where you came from,’ ” the witness, Abdul Rauf Khan, said. Khan said a man in a white truck stopped at a stop sign, got out of the car and approached them from behind. “He had been drinking. He was smelling bad. It was a vicious attack. He just started throwing punches.”
