Does This Cheapen the Office of the President?

Does President Obama's plan to run a lottery for his Campaign Coffers sound Cheap?

Not really. I mean, Teddy would stand for hours outside the WH shaking hands. Sorta the same principle to me, though obviously Teddy is greater even in death than Obama ever ill be in life.

No more than 'donating' a substantially larger sum for the opportunity to whisper things into the President's ear.

The only people that should be permitted to dine in the presence of (let alone with) the President of the United States of America are those that can donate a minimum of $25,000 per plate, not the fucking $5 donating proles.

Those that can or those that do? Because I got some extra scratch layin around, but I'll be damned if anyone other than Vladimir Putin gets it.

Actually I believe the contest rules say you don't even have to donate the $5 to win dinner with the President. You just have to sign up.

Haha! I cannot claim credit. I read about in the local paper so someone else did the fine print reading for me. :)

In an effort to gather more cash for his campaign, President Obama has decided to sell tickets to a drawing for "Dinner with Obama"...

For a $5 "donation" or higher you will be entered into a drawing where you can "win" a seat at the dinner table with President Obama.

My question is: Does this cheapen the office?

not really, it opens the chance to meet the candidate/president

That is an interesting story, but it really has nothing to do with my question. I remember in the past people talking about how selling a night in the Lincoln bedroom "cheapened" the office. I wondered if people would think the same about this.

Nothing to do with your question, even though it's the same type fundraising scheme?

From the WorldNut daily story:

If you make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to fly to Denver and spend two days and nights at the convention, meet Barack backstage, and watch his acceptance speech in person. Each of the ten supporters who are selected will be able to bring one guest to join them.

From the link in your OP:

Make a donation today—and be automatically registered for a chance to have dinner with President Obama and three other supporters. We’ll cover your airfare and the meal—all you need to bring is your story and your ideas.

Right, nothing to do with my question because it is asking an entirely different question. Had my OP said, "Is it illegal gambling?" you may have a point. But in this case you are taking two different questions and pretending that they are the same thing. Now, do you think it "cheapens" the office or not?

Nope. Did you think it cheapened the office in 2008, or do you think it is illegal gambling?

In 2008, neither candidate held the office so the question is moot. As far as "illegal gambling" goes, that is a question for a different thread.

"Neither candidate"?

Do you think it cheapens the office today, or is that question moot, too?

Semantics are very important in this, for some reason. At work, we are allowed to hold "fundraisers" with "drawings" and sell "tickets," but we aren't allowed to have "raffles." :cof1:
