The U.S. government increased the federal tax on cigarettes last year by 159%, to $1.01 per pack. A pack now typically sells for about $10 in New York City, more than double what it cost 10 years ago, and the state is considering yet another excise increase.

They want to reimburse us for the cost of this industry being in business.

Cigs produce costly medical conditions that increase the cost to everyone.

$10 a pac and it's a large tax, there would be huge layoff's without the tax. I knew they were high, but I had no idea $10 a pac as a non cig smoker.

Sometimes I think the only thing the Democrats and left have ever done in the war on drugs is to try their best to expand it to tobacco. :(

The government willingly helped these people to stay in business while taxing them all while knowing it was bad for people, they were complicit, not a victim. And when taxes become overbearing people will buy them from the gray or black markets.

they could stop it, but now I think the gov will act like a crack addict and need and protect the tabacco manufacturers.

it would be nice if that were the actual reason, but its not. The gov knows that they can tax things like tobacco products pretty high and get away with it because a majority of the populace doesn't use them.

It is a fact that the revenues raised from cigarettes more than pays for the medical costs of smoking related diseases, at least in the UK anyway. It is estimated that medical costs are around £5 billion per year whilst the taxes collected are around £10 billion. You need also to bear in mind that insurance, pension and medical care would rise considerably if there were no smokers dying before their time and not getting their due share. I speak as an ex smoker.
