First of all, it is YOU who is irrational, not me. You talk like some 9th-grader, who has never even participated in Junior Achievement or Distributive Education classes. You have no concept of how things work in the real world, your ideas are simple-minded and emotive. This argument began with your absurd idea that we should suspend trade with China. Just cut our trade ties completely, and make our own stuff! Now, that's a really simple thought, but actually putting it into action, is a very complicated and difficult thing to do, and you seem to think it would be simple and easy to do.
For instance, the main products we import from China, are nickel, zinc, and lumber. These aren't really products we have the capacity to manufacture ourselves, we simply don't have the resources at our disposal. It doesn't matter how much we might WANT to do it, we CAN'T do it! But putting natural resources aside, and considering actual manufactured goods, we import mostly computer-related products, electronics, toys, clothes, footwear, and household items. These things are produced in China at a fraction of the cost we can produce them here, because of the cost of labor.
We could certainly make those things here, but would consumers pay the price that would have to be charged, in order to pay for the increased cost of labor to produce them? All of these items would increase in price by 300-1000% at least, and American consumers would simply not pay those prices unless it was something they HAD to buy. Now, that is just if things remain the same with regard to the value of our dollar. The biggest problem would be, what China is currently buying from us...our DEBT! You see, trade agreements are mutual arrangements, we buy products from China, and they buy products from us. If we stopped buying from them, they would stop buying from us, and what are they buying from us? Well, they do buy some semi-conductors, plastics, soybeans, raw cotton, tobacco... all of those industries would suffer the loss of a huge customer, which would cause massive unemployment for Americans, but the primary thing China purchases from the US, is our monetary debt. They buy our bonds, they have trillions of dollars worth already, and they continue to buy them. Should we cut trade ties with China, they would certainly cash those in, and we don't have the monetary ability to honor those! So, we would have to print more money... this would result in drastically diminishing the value of the dollar. Now we have a scenario which gets markedly worse for Americans, as all of these products which are costing us 300-1000% more on the shelf, are being paid for with dollars which have less and less value. That's IF we lived in your fantasy world, where we just magically started manufacturing all these things on our own again! I guess you think manufacturing facilities just mysteriously appear when needed, out of nowhere, built and operated by fairies who can ignore financial risks and make this all happen overnight?
Even when confronted with the realization of economic collapse and a worthless dollar, you maintain your irrationality... We can let it collapse and just revert to a "barter system!" People don't need money! Apparently, we can all live in huts, forage for berries and trade animal pelts. In your mind, this would make things BETTER for all Americans! And you think I am the "irrational" one here?
