Detroit police are touting an achievement the department says is the first of its kind in months: No homicides or non-fatal shootings in 36 hours.
In a news release, police also said the city is experiencing a year-to-date decrease in homicides and non-fatal shootings compared to 2012.
Today’s announcement came after several weeks of bloodshed in the city.
■ Last week, two people were killed and another injured in a triple shooting on the city’s west side. According to police, the three people were playing cards when someone shot up the house.
■ On Nov. 17, the mayor of Highland Park was wounded in a shooting at a Detroit club.
■ On. Nov. 8, a 1-year-old girl was shot in the cheek while inside a home on the city’s east side. The shooting was the result of an escalating neighborhood dispute, according to police.
■ On Nov. 6, nine people were shot — three fatally — at a barbershop on Detroit’s east side.
■ On Nov. 3, a shooting killed a pregnant woman and a man and injured an elderly man. Later, the slain woman’s child, delivered by emergency C-section, also died.
■ On Oct. 30, a Wayne State University law student was found fatally shot after disappearing days earlier. She was in her SUV, in a vacant lot near the old Packard plant in Detroit.
According to police, 308 homicides have occurred so far this year, which officials say is a 13% decrease from the same time last year. Likewise, police say there have been 1,084 non-fatal shootings, down nearly 6% compared to last year.
“We can directly attribute this decline to the dedication of the hardworking men and women of this department and the continuing assistance of the citizens of this great city,” the news release said.
