Democrats panicked about third-party candidates swinging election for Trump: 'Single biggest threat'

Democrats are reportedly panicked over third-party candidate strength as the 2024 presidential election gets closer, as some strategists see third-party candidates as the "single biggest threat."

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is establishing an official committee, led by former Pete Buttigieg campaign staffer and Democratic operative Lis Smith, to counter the third-party threat, according to NBC News. They plan to counter third-party efforts through an "aggressive communications component," opposition research and legal action.

"The single biggest threat that helps put Trump back in the White House is third-party candidates. It’s not Biden’s age. It’s not whether Trump gets convicted. It’s not any of that stuff," Joe Trippi, a veteran Democratic strategist, told the media outlet.

Matt Corridoni, another Buttigieg campaign staffer, plans to join the DNC's effort as well and told NBC News, "With so much on the line, we’re not taking anything for granted. We’re going to make sure voters are educated and we’re going to make sure all candidates are playing by the rules."

"There is some Jill Stein hangover," Pat Dennis, the president of Democratic opposition research group American Bridge, said. "A lot of people, including me, regret that we didn’t go after her further."

"Trump needs to split the anti-Trump coalition. If we’re united, we win. If we’re not, he wins," Dennis added. "We see [Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and No Labels] essentially as an arm of the Trump campaign, and we intend to treat it as such."

Trippi, who co-founded a new super PAC that plans to run ads in battleground states on third-party efforts, said "The Trump people know he needs strong third parties."

"The Biden campaign is going to have to spend a boatload of money educating people about the danger of a third-party vote," former Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, a frequent guest on MSNBC, said. "Biden will have to spend money explaining there’s no vote for anyone else that’s not a vote for Trump.".....

The Democrats are panicking.

Not much thinking going on with trump, but any sane Republican would be terrified of a strong 3rd party candidate too.

And the lulus looming as this election's third party candidates are the kind that might attract Trump type voters.

Great, now for all the republicans that despise your velveeta man but can't bring themselves to vote for a democrat will have someone to vote for! Let's see we have that RFK jr that is against vaccines? Which party is it that doesn't believe in them?

About half of Republicans really hate trump. They hate Biden more, but given a third party candidate to vote for, they might just do that.

100% of Democrats really hate trump. They will vote for Biden to keep trump, who they believe is a threat to this country, out of office.

You're missing what's going on here. You might not know it from reading this board, but a lot of people are unhappy with our two (main) choices for President. The No Labels party has been working to put a more centrist even bi-partisan ticket together. You know who has been fighting against that the hardest? The 'pro democracy' Democrats. Biden has, ironically, called them a threat to democracy. Democrats have threatened people who get involved with No Labels or donate to them.

A reasonable person might ask why those who label themselves 'pro democracy' would take such an approach. Because they know the potential trouble Biden is in. So they want Biden and Trump to be the only options with the hope that people will be so repulsed by Trump that will hold their nose and vote for Biden. But given a more mainstream third party option, even if it can't win, they think enough people will vote for it and it might cost Biden the election.

(Again, doesn't show leading Democrats having much confidence in Biden by having that attitude. I am not the only Republican who has not voted for Trump in the prior two elections, and will not vote for him in this one. I voted Libertarian the past two elections. I could easily vote for a No Labels candidate. But Democrats think it's the potential Biden voters who will go for No Labels.)

What was the Vietnam saying 'we had to burn the City down to save it'? (or something like that) Kind of the same thing here 'to keep Democracy we need to actually be against Democracy' is the argument being made. Yes, it is that transparent.

It has always been both parties. Long ago, I worked in the health food industry and there were many anti vaxxer hippies, health food nuts, and those who only wanted "all natural" lives.

The surgeon general of florida is a republican and says no need for measles vaccine. Now they have a serious outbreak there, a bunch of fucking ignorant republicans. Maybe when a couple kids go blind their ignorant parents might just question their choices.

Interesting behavior if there is no concern.

Who are No Labels’ donors? Democratic groups file complaints in an attempt to find out

For months, the centrist group No Labels has stockpiled cash and diligently worked to secure ballot access for a potential third-party presidential bid, striking fear among allies of President Joe Biden that the effort could siphon away votes and hand the White House to Donald Trump.

The anti-No Labels pledge

Democrats concerned about an independent "No Labels" presidential bid are pressing elected officials to publicly denounce a potential third-party campaign.

Why it matters: In a closely divided country, many Democrats fear a third party campaign will siphon more votes from President Biden, their likely nominee, and tilt the Electoral College to former President Trump.
