A woman driving on a rural highway survived after getting bullet fragments in her skull from random gunfire celebrating the new year.

Victoria Osborne was driving along Highway 158 in northwestern Guilford County when her driver's side window shattered around 12:20 a.m. Sunday.

"I didn't even hear it shatter. I didn't hear anything," Osborne said.

Her head began to hurt as she continued to drive, so she pulled over and called 911.

An EMT, thinking a rock caused a freak accident, gave Osborne a bandage and said she'd be fine.

But Osborne said she instead got a lot worse.

She started feeling heavy pressure in her head and soon had a throbbing headache, a loss of hearing in her left ear and difficulty walking straight without help.

She went to Cone Health's medical facility in High Point, and as a doctor cleaned the wound, she saw something other than just glass fragments.

"She went to go get the tweezers and pull it out. That's when she said, 'Oh, this is an actual (bullet) fragment,'" Osborne said.

Osborne had seven staples put into her head, and Dr. Sam Jacubowitz said the skull fracture will heal easily with little treatment.

"She just had minor bleeding into her brain"...
