Quoted: "At a time when many Americans are struggling and our economy faces significant challenges, we're pleased that the T-Mobile merger allows us to bring 5,000 jobs back to the United States and significantly increase our investment here."

Reality: AT&T now says its proposed merger with T-Mobile would create thousands of call-center jobs in the U.S.
But that's not what it was saying in March when it announced the $39 billion deal to buy its competitor.
AT&T bragged to its investors in March that the merger would save tens of billions of dollars in the first four years by eliminating redundant customer-service jobs, closing duplicative retail stores and reducing other costs.
About half of T-Mobile's 40,000 employees could lose their jobs in a merger.
AT&T says it will increase its capital spending by $8 billion, but that's $10 billion less than the two companies were planning to spend on network improvements and spectrum.
There's nothing stopping AT&T or T-Mobile from bringing back 5,000 call-center jobs to the U.S. right now -- whether the merger goes through or not.
It's notable that AT&T made the promise to repatriate the jobs just hours before the U.S. Justice Department sued to block the merger.
