Video footage Houston police have released that shows the shooting of a black man doesn't clearly depict what the man was doing in the moments before he was fatally shot.

Some footage released Thursday is taken from a convenience store surveillance camera that shows 38-year-old Alva Braziel in the distance standing in the street. He falls to the ground 10 seconds after a police vehicle pulls up to him.

Other footage comes from the body cameras of the two officers who arrived at the scene. But the officer-activated cameras start recording in the moments after Braziel was shot.

Mayor Sylvester Turner and police say Braziel pointed the weapon at the officers, prompting them to fire in self-defense.

Turner says a friend of Braziel acknowledged to police at the scene that he was armed.
