Cop who arrested black scholar is profiling expert

Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class about racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.

"I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy," Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.

pronounce judgment when he admitted he didn't know all the facts....as president, his words carry more weight and more public humiliation....obama is a junior high thug...you don't go around saying...that was stupid...but hey, i don't all the facts

But arresting the guy was stupid. I think the hoopla surrounding the event is testimony enough to the stupidity of the act.

You don't need all the facts to know that arresting a guy at his own house for saying things the cop didn't like is stupid.

they didn't arrest him for saying things they didn't like...they arrested him for disorderly conduct....are you ever going to get your facts straight on this? earlier you were claiming they arrested him in his house....

you don't have all the facts so you cannot say it was stupid...for obama do it is absurd, for people like you and i it really doesn't matter because no one really listens to us....but the president just caused that guy national embarrassment when the idiot president said he didn't even know all the facts....only moron would do that

this case is nothing but the prof getting attention so he can write his next book about racism...it is clear that guy had nothing big going on since his last series so he sees a great opportunity and immediately starts yelling racism and then makes a big national ruckus over it....

Obama's assertion was supported by the Cambridge Police Department who called the incident "regrettable and unfortuante."

One didn't need all the facts to know that arresting this guy was stupid.

AND there is no doubt this cops superiors had a talk with him and told him how to better handle such situations.

How does this embarrass Obama .. except with the crowd that doesn't like him anyway?

They arrested him wither in his house or on his porch and the police report makes clear that he was arrested for saying things in his house that the cops did not like.

It was stupid. Take a look at the law for disorderly conduct and the requirements that a person must meet to lawfully be arrested for disorderly conduct. It isn't even a close question.

I repeat, one does not need all the facts to recognize that arresting a man who broke into his own house then became rude to a cop in an environment where racial tensions already exist is STUPID .. VALIDATED by his own department who quickly dropped the charge AND called the incident "regrettable and unfortunate" .. in other words, STUPID and it's something they don't need.

Come on, way too often "Disorderly Conduct" is code for "pissed the cop off."

This guy should not have been arrested... Obama should not have commented.

BAC you are way to smart for that argument, how many criminals (not saying the professor is one) walked out of jail due to pardons by our presidents leaving office?

What other response would you think ya would get after the president says you acted stupidly?

In a perfect world if the cops thought they were right they would of argued , but then again in a perfect world we wouldn't have racism

it makes a difference for DC dungheap....grind already posted Mass law and the guy, according to the facts so far, fits DC to a tee....why don't you take a look at the law and then explain to me why he doesn't. don't just make rash conclusions without reading the law.....

i wasn't there and i don't have all the facts....according to the report the prof immediately starting yelling racism and continued by following the policeman outside with his yelling tirade while the officer was trying to conduct an investigation.....from the facts so far, the prof's behavior is indefensible and obama to stupidly remark on it and then say "uh geee...i don't uh, have, uh, all the, uh facts..." makes obama look like a total moron

Where is Grind's post?

I've read the law. And I've read the limitations the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has placed on the law to save it from its facial unconstitutionality. The language of the statute doesn't tell you the whole story.

Edit: The conduct complained of occurred in Gates's home and maybe on his porch. I guess we can disagree as to whether Gates's front porch is "public" for purposes of the statute but I don't think it is, particularly in light of what the Supreme Judicial Court has said with regard to the type of conduct the statute is designed to protect against.

i was wrong....he posted general law...i misread it thinking he was posting mass. law given his response, but upon a more careful reading all he posted was his opinion and what he thinks some general law is
