The House passed a bill Wednesday that would remove from public display at the U.S. Capitol a statue of Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney, who wrote the 1857 Dred Scott decision that defended slavery and denied the citizenship of Black Americans.

The legislation, which the House passed by voice vote, declares that Taney's authorship of the decision "renders a bust of his likeness unsuitable for the honor of display to the many visitors to the Capitol."

In the Dred Scott decision, the opinion of the court stated that if African Americans were considered U.S. citizens, "It would give to persons of the negro race, who were recognized as citizens in any one State of the Union, the right ... to keep and carry arms wherever they went."

no surprise that Democrats need to make this about slavery instead of their true purpose.

There is a great youtube video of Lee Atwater (Republican campaign strategist) bragging about how it was his idea after the Civil Rights movement for the Republicans to use racism as a dog whistle because the Democrats had supported desegregation. Starting with Nixon the Republicans started with phrases that are quietly racist to attract the Southern White electorate. That is when the Southern States switched from Democrat to Republican.
