Three police officers and an “unknown number of civilians” have been injured in an active shooter situation near a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs on Friday, authorities said.

The situation remained “very active” roughly two hours after it began, police said.

Though Lt. Kirk Wilson, a Colorado Springs police spokesman, told the Colorado Springs Gazette that the shooter had been “contained,” a different police spokesperson, Lt. Catherine Buckley, said it was “very much an active situation.”

“We can’t confirm where the shooter is at at this point,” Buckley told reporters.

The department’s public affairs division said on social media that the situation was “still not stable.”

“At this time, our concern is for the safety of our patients, staff and law enforcement,” said Vicki Cowart, the president and chief executive of Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountain.

Planned Parenthood declined to say whether the shooting happened at or near the health center.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department said on Twitter that an active shooter was reported at the clinic on Centennial Boulevard shortly before noon local time. Buckley, the police spokeswoman, said the original call came from the Planned Parenthood health center.

ATF special agents were among those who responded to the scene. Deborah Sherman of the FBI’s Denver field office said local authorities had not yet requested the agency’s assistance.

Update - got him!

A gunman was taken into custody late Friday after exchanging gunfire with the police for hours inside a Planned Parenthood center here, the authorities said.

Mayor John Suthers said that the gunman was in custody but that hours of work remained to clear the crime scene, particularly to identify items that the gunman brought with him.

Well if the shooter were Syrian, he'd most likely also be Muslim, and I suppose Muslims are also "pro-life", so my statement still works.

Robert Lewis Dear was identified as the gunman who allegedly killed three people and wounded nine others Friday during a shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, according to the AP.

Robert Lewis Dear, the suspected gunman, is from Hartsel, Colorado. According to KDVR-TV, he was previously a resident of North Carolina and is originally from South Carolina.

Dear’s age has been reported to as both 57 and 59, but public records indicate that he is 57. His family is from South Carolina, according to public records and his father’s obituary.

According to court records, Dear has an arrest record in both North and South Carolina. He has been convicted of several traffic offenses, but has been arrested several times on more serious charges.

His convictions include seat belt violations, driver’s license violations, operating a vehicle in an unsafe mechanical condition and driving a non-registered vehicle.

Dear was charged in Colleton, South Carolina, with two counts of cruelty to animals in 2002, but was found not guilty in a bench trial.

He was also charged in 2002 in Colleton with charges of “peeping Tom” and eavesdropping. Those charges were dismissed.

The mayor of Colorado Springs says authorities aren't ready to discuss a possible motive of the gunman who attacked a Planned Parenthood clinic there but says people can make "inferences from where it took place."
