Gulf of America Coastal Freeze: Winter weather impacts (road closures, warnings, advisories)

Emergency Management officials provided an update on weather conditions as the area remains under Winter Storm and Extreme Cold warnings until the morning.

Officials said that the following roads are closed in Walton County:
  • Interstate 10 eastbound and westbound from Exit 70 (Mossy Head) EAST to Exit 5 in Pensacola
  • The Baldwin Avenue bridge in Defuniak Springs
During the winter weather, officials advised residents to stay indoors and off the roadways.

“Please stay indoors as impacts could cause frostbite, hypothermia, as well as damage to plants and pipes,” a news release said. “The temperature Wednesday may only reach the mid-30s which may limit melting and as evening and overnight temperatures drop, accumulated snow may re-freeze, creating icy roadway hazards. We urge residents and visitors to stay off the roadways unless absolutely necessary.”

UPDATE (9 p.m.): Santa Rosa County shared that the Chappie James 3-Mile Bridge is closed due to weather conditions.

Officials said the closure will last until further notice and that reopening is currently unknown.

UPDATE (8:30 p.m.): The City of Pensacola announced another road closure as the winter storm continues to impact the area.

According to a city news release, the Pensacola Bay Bridge (Three Mile Bridge) in Pensacola is set to be shut down. This comes after a request from the Florida Highway Patrol to the Pensacola Police Department.
