Condition of Child Shot Outside Riverside County Fair "Serious"
Concerned neighbors gather to pray for the injured child. (02-21-11) INDIO-- A 5-year-old child remained hospitalized Tuesday after being hit in an Indio drive-by shooting just outside the Riverside County Fairgrounds, police confirm to KPSP Local 2 News.
The boy was listed in critical condition Monday night, but that has been since upgraded to "serious" as of Tuesday morning, at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
Ben Guitron of the Indio Police Department says the child was taken to JFK Hospital by a family member after being shot in the stomach.
It all happened just before 6:00 p.m., in the area of John Nobles Avenue and Arabia Street, in the 46-500 block of Monte Verde Street, when two cars were shooting at each other, according to Guitron.
The boy was standing in his driveway when he was hit in the crossfire, just blocks from the action of the fair.

Word of the shooting quickly spread and concerned neighbors and onlookers gathered to express their grieve and pray for the child.
"We're very alarmed any time someone gets shot, but particularly when our children are put in harm's way, it's very alarming," said Carl McPeters, a local pastor.
John Nobles between Daisy Street and Rubidoux Street was shut down for several hours, while police combed the area for suspects in the case, according to Guitron. So far no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Police were looking for a blue truck and a dark colored Chevy Blazer, suspected of being involved in the drive-by shooting. No suspect descriptions were immediately available.
Police say the shooting is in no way connected to the ongoing Riverside County Fair & Date Festival, which remained open despite the nearby crime scene Monday night.
