A truck rented by the Secret Service carrying equipment for Vice President Joe Biden's trip to the state on Monday was stolen outside a Detroit hotel, the Secret Service said late Sunday.
Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the U-Haul truck was stolen outside the Westin Book Cadillac hotel at Washington and Michigan in downtown Detroit late Saturday or early Sunday. He said the truck carried Secret Service property, but no weapons that could have put the public at risk.
Donovan declined to say what property was stolen or the value.
The vice president is scheduled to speak at a Labor Day rally in Detroit.
Donovan said the theft "will not affect the visit." The matter has been turned over to the Detroit Police Department, Donovan said. Detroit police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said Detroit police are looking for the van.
"It hasn't been recovered and it's still under investigation," Stephens said. A campaign spokeswoman for Biden, Amy Dudley, declined to comment and referred questions to the Secret Service.
Biden will be in Charlotte, N.C., to speak at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

According to a source inside Biden's circle, the truck contained tennis shoes he was planning on handing out to the crowd tomorrow.
