Cheney on the problem with American politics: ‘We’re electing idiots’

Ms. Cheney has that right we're electing clowns and idiots, just look at the freedom caucus as an example, nuff said?!! Need to end this gerrymandering would also help too?!!

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) suggested Monday that the problem with American politics is that “we’re electing idiots.”

“Look, I think that the country right now faces hugely challenging and fundamentally important issues,” Cheney said at an event with the cultural and community center, 92nd Street Y, New York. “What we’ve done in our politics is create a situation where we’re electing idiots.”

Cheney, who is a staunch opponent of former President Trump, offered the reflection in response to a question about whether she would run for president if polling showed that it would hurt Trump’s third White House run.

“I don’t look at it through the lens of, you know, is this what I should do or what I shouldn’t do,” the former congresswoman said. “I look at it through the lens of, how do we elect serious people? And I think electing serious people can’t be partisan.”

Cheney was an old-school conservative. More like a Reagan Republican.

The GOP has gotten SO far away from that. Now, you're a RINO if you don't profess complete loyalty to Trump. It really has nothing to do w/ conservative principles anymore.
 
I had virtually nothing in common with the old school conservatives like Ms. Cheney herself.

The modern ones do take it to another level, however.
I'm convinced that they're mutants, devolved to sub-human level.
Trumpanzees, for example, are still primates..
but are they really people?
They're not--not by any definition to which I'd stipulate.

Me either. Her father is a terrible human. He was a disaster. But while I do not approve of her politics, I appreciate that she is trying to save the American experiment from destruction by Trump and his army of haters.

I usually say this board shouldn’t be a proxy for anything however maybe in this instance it should. This board is full of political junkies who do little but yell at each other and often go so far as to wish ill on each other. It’s rare people actually talk with each other and have actual discussions, even if there is disagreement.

If we’re the type of people electing politicians is it surprising there are few statesmen left and those who get the most attention are the most extreme and ones who act out on places like Twitter?

Politics has never been kumbaya but in the past there were people who could at least talk and attempt to work with each other from differing sides. Very little of that today. In fact that is frowned upon in many quarters.

People of polar opposite values cannot debate.
Debate requires stipulations.

If we both want this,
than which is the better way to achieve it--
your way or my way?

That doesn't apply to America's two predominant political factions.
We don't want the same result,
so how can we debate the means to get there? We cannot.

All meaningful debate takes place within the factions, not between them.

Nothing is more indicative of that last sentiment than the conservative reaction when Cheney fist-bumped Biden. Total outrage.

Politicians used to have adversaries. Now, they are enemies.

Tip O'Neil & Reagan would regularly meet over dinner, and had a friendly and cordial relationship despite their differences.

Just read a couple of comments earlier in the thread where it’s essentially the dehumanizing of people we disagree with.

To each his own and people are free to agree with it, but if we’re going to complain about idiots in office it takes looking in the mirror to understand why.
