Chappelle breaks SNL tradition with emotional monologue about Trump and black Americans

Finally hosting Saturday Night Live, comedian Dave Chappelle was confronted with slightly different circumstances than when he was booked on the show, at a time it was believed that Donald Trump would not become America’s next president.

With the stunning loss of Hillary Clinton, Chappelle made the best of it by first calling Trump an “internet troll” before making a powerful statement about mutual respect.

Addressing Clinton’s loss, Chappelle remarked, “The whites are furious. They’ve never seen anything like it. I haven’t seen white people this mad since the O.J. verdict. I watched a white riot in Portland, Oregon, on television the other night. News said they did a million dollars worth of damage. Every black person watching was like, ‘amateurs.’”

As he concluded his opening monologue, Chappelle reminisced about a BET White House function that celebrated African Americans and how hopeful it made him feel after he related a history of how difficult it had been for the “historically disenfranchised” to feel welcome there.

He used that memory to pivot back to President-elect Trump.

“It made me feel proud to be an American and it made me very happy about the prospects of our country,” said Chappelle. “So, in that spirit, I’m wishing Donald Trump luck. And I’m going to give him a chance. And we, the historically disenfranchised, demand that he give us one too.”

So, first I insult him then say I'm going to give him a chance... A bit of a left-handed conciliatory statement, but I'm sure Trump will take it.

SNL, every late night show host ect. all in mourning this week. Just reinforces the bubble they operate in.

Why exactly, should black Americans fret over Trump?

Honest question.

I never thought Trump was a racist personally. I think he realized early on that the more racist & xenophobic elements of America would provide a lot of energy for his campaign, and he played to that. He is a master manipulator, and a lot of his rhetoric (and retweets) certainly towed the line, in a way that sent some subtle and not-so-subtle messages to that aspect of his base.

In a way, he has made America safer for racists -at least safer than it was a week ago or a year ago. There is ample reason to fret. For many, it's like we just set the clock back 50 years.

I can't give him that much credit. I think he's just racist enough to hide it, like most "internet trolls" as Chappelle called him. He's a Breitbart kinda guy. He retweets the statistics and stories that make him feel good about his preconceived notions on race.
