Joe Biden - "Time to put Trump in the bullseye."

oct 2 2023 California’s newest senator is a resident of the state of Maryland.

Democratic Golden State Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Sunday evening that he was tapping Emily’s List president Laphonza Butler to serve out the term of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who died last week at the age of 90.

However, records indicate that Butler has spent recent years far from the constituents she will represent for the next 15 months.

A Federal Election Commission filing from the end of August for the abortion rights advocacy group listed Silver Spring, Md., as Butler’s place of residence.

Individual donation records for Butler further indicated she had not lived in California since at least September 2021, when she was tapped to head up the powerful Democrat-supporting organization.

Butler’s X, formerly Twitter, account previously indicated that she lived in Maryland before being scrubbed around the time Newsom’s announcement went public.

Some iterations of her Wikipedia page also had her living in Maryland as well, though that appears to have been edited to reflect her Los Angeles roots.

California is a state that is close to half Hispanic and something like 15% Asian, yet you only mentioned that they 'banned' white people. It's funny in 2023 that so many people view race as if America were still in 1950, when the country really was mostly white and black.

Your late text, already been debunked twice already this morning

For beginners, id she decides to keep the position, she has to run in a primary next March, and, a general election the November thereafter, in addition, it was a smart move by him to rid himself of all the in-house political scrambles of who he should appoint to fill the seat

Try to keep up

Governor Hair Gel promised he would choose a black woman as Feinstein's successor. The "first" black, immigrant, lgbtqis+++xyz must be pissed.

Not everyone thinks it was a smart move...

Some Black activists and advocates were furious with Newsom Sunday for not appointing Lee.

“It’s going to hurt him,” Fred Jordan, chairman of the board of the San Francisco African American Chamber of Commerce, said Sunday. “Those women in South Carolina that gave Joe Biden the bump, they’re gonna be outraged.”

Jordan called Newsom’s appointment of Butler “disingenuous” and said he “has not fulfilled his promise” to appoint a Black woman to the seat. He wanted Newsom to appoint Lee, who he called “the most qualified” person he could have tapped. He slammed Newsom’s comment earlier this month that appointing Lee “would be completely unfair to the Democrats that have worked their tail off. That primary is just a matter of months away, I don’t want to tip the balance of that.”

Molly Watson, deputy director of California Donor Table and a board member for the Black Women’s Democratic Club of Los Angeles County, congratulated Butler, but was also “baffled” that Newsom did not choose Lee. (Butler previously served on the donor group’s advisory board.)

“We’re baffled by Gavin Newsom’s decision not to appoint Rep. Lee from the get-go,” Watson said in a text to the Chronicle. Florida Gov. Ron “DeSantis wouldn’t have botched a golden opportunity to fulfill a public promise, make a popular appointment and put an appointee ahead in seniority of new senators elected after 2024.”

So what’s with your USC getting little respect, Colorado running up over forty points, two touchdowns in the fourth quarter? And if I am not wrong, they still got ND, Utah, and Oregon yet to face

Wasn’t gong to make everyone happy, but least now he doesn’t have to listen to the other interests who had other candidates in mind, besides, she is a huge Union/labor figure

Surprising move, but don’t think it will hurt him politically down the road, especially if the women enters and wins in March plus November

Our schedule is really weird in the sense (not disrespecting Colorado) we haven't really played anyone. We're about to face a stretch where we play four teams in the top 11 I believe in a spam of five weeks. It's going to get very real. So kind of hard to judge the team because we haven't been tested yet. We basically have a national championship level offense and a Cheeze-It-Bowl level defense (if that).

I understand him not wanting to influence the race by appointing someone (Lee, Barbara) who is already running. But ultimately this is politics and black people, black women specifically are his backbone. He upset them by choosing Alex Padilla (he's LatinX) to replace Harris instead of another black woman. Thus him making the promise during the recall to potentially replace Feinstein with a black woman.

But then you had Barbara Lee in particular, but others as well, upset that a black woman would be viewed as only a placeholder. I don't pretend to know how this will ultimately play out at the voting booth vis a vis Newsom's future as a result of this decision. But even local progressive writers are saying he's walking a very fine line and could be alienating the people he needs most (especially if he were to face Harris in the future).

You are aware the women he picked is black, and she has a history with labor/Unions, and admittedly not knowing California politics, I’m guessing given probably the apparent volatility within all the segments of the Democrat Party in California, he may have just wanted to remove himself from the fray, besides,

Stop changing the subject, you stupid tranny. The issue here is she is NOT a CA resident.

In your defense, you're in New York so I'm guessing this isn't written about/discussed on a daily basis like it is here. Thus you don't get the various nuances involved but I've posted a couple of articles on the board from local progressive writers discussing Newsom's predicament, including the excerpt in this thread.

I’ll buy that, however as a thought, wouldn’t it have been a way for him to get around those progressives so not to have pissed off the more moderate branch of the Democrat Party? As I said she is a big Labor/Union figure, which to a degree, shouldn’t anger those progressives not caught up with the personalities entirely

And you know he is also thinking 2024, and having a labor person in his camp won’t hurt nationally, plus it is not like he would lose California even with the State progressives pissed at him

Lastly, USC couldn’t take this team into the Big 10 next year and anticipate winning the league, nor I’d wager being competitive with the upper echelon of teams

Maybe Newsome thinks California is all there is. After all, he certainly acts like it is...

Well, then his insistence that folks are not moving out of California would make more sense. If there is no other place than California then they've never left.

Since 1992 no Democrat has won the party's nomination without winning a majority of black voters. It's same reason Biden made the Supreme Court pledge he did. Lots of constituencies make up the Democratic base but none are more important than black voters to winning nominations (or elections).

(To me it seems clear, most Democrats won't care about this one way or the other as long as the seat remains controlled by Democrats - which it will. But to black women specifically this is extremely important and if they aren't satisfied it could be enough to make them support another Democrat for President in a future primary.)

You overestimate the Big 10. The conference is not that good right now.
