The North Carolina House approved legislation Wednesday that would raise the state's lowest-in-the-nation marriage age, a move advocates say is critical to protect girls from being pressed into marriages with older men.
Current law allows children to marry as young as 14 if the girl is pregnant and a district court judge signs off. That practice would end under Senate Bill 35, which raises the minimum age to 16.
The bill also says anyone aged 16 or 17 can only marry someone with a maximum four-year age difference.
The measure moved slowly through this General Assembly session as lawmakers negotiated over the details, but it cleared the North Carolina House Wednesday afternoon on a unanimous vote. It will head back to the state Senate now for what will likely be another unanimous vote."
