A female Labor MP has been shot twice after she stepped in when two men were seen fighting in the street while she was out campaigning.

Jo Cox, MP for Batley and Spen, was speaking to locals in Birstall near Leeds when the scuffle broke out. She is now in a critical condition in hospital.

An eyewitness said: 'He was fighting with her and wrestling with her and then the gun went off twice and then she fell between two cars and I came and saw her bleeding.'

Witnesses said the man shouted 'Britain First' during the scuffle.

Jo Cox, a 41-year-old member of the center-left Labor Party who has been outspoken in advocating for civilian victims in Syria, was pronounced an hour after she was assaulted outside a library near the city of Leeds.

Police officials said they believed that a 52-year-old man who was taken into custody was responsible for the attack.

British media quoted witnesses saying that the assailant shouted "Britain First!" during and after the attack — a slogan linked to anti-immigrant groups.

Britain First is the name of a far-right group that stages provocative anti-Muslim demonstrations.

Man I'm sure this is going to totally dominate /r/the_donald. Being that they are bastions of free speech and only care about impartially reporting attacks.
 
Britain First should be banned, it's membership list seized and everyone on the list stripped of citizenship and imprisoned indefinitely. Britain First is a terrorist group.
 
Gifford was lucky to survive.

This killing doesn't appear to be a targeted killing though. It looks as if she just intervened in the wrong squabble. Time will tell.

She's a leading advocate for immigrants and refugees.

Her killer yelling "Britain First" doesn't seem to indicate a random killing, does it?

I imagine America bigots are sad because he only had what's been described as a "home-made" gun.

Imagine how many more he could have killed if Britain didn't oppress the citizens and they could have all the guns and ammo they want!

Terry Flynn-Edwards, who runs the hair studio opposite the scene of the attack, said a man from a dry cleaners had tried to stop the assault. She said Cox “walked out of the library with her PA and he was waiting for her. He stabbed her first and this guy tried to stop him and then he shot her.”
