Black early voting turnout falls in key battleground states

Early voting turnout for black voters in key battleground states has fallen from 2012, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

In North Carolina, where presidential candidates Hillary Clinton (D) and Donald Trump (R) are in a tight race, black turnout is down 16 percent from this point in 2012, while white turnout is up 15 percent.

And in Florida, black voters’ share of the early voting turnout is 15 percent, 10 points lower than it was in 2012. Clinton and Trump are also locked in a tight race in that state.

The drop in early voting comes after black turnout soared in President Obama's two electoral wins.

Electing the first black president in U.S. history in 2008 and securing his reelection four years later inspired heavy turnout among black voters in both elections.

Clinton is also popular with black voters, but she does not appear to be inspiring the level of enthusiasm and support that was behind Obama.

Many on the left also point to early voting restrictions imposed by a GOP-controlled state legislature as the reason for the downturn. A 2013 Supreme Court decision that overturned certain provisions of the Voting Rights Act allowed states like North Carolina to implement restrictions that cut down on early voting.

President Obama is sounding the alarm about low turnout among black voters in key battleground states, arguing it could sink Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s chances of winning the White House and put his legacy in jeopardy.

“I’m going to be honest with you right now. The Latino vote is up. The overall vote is up. But the African-American vote, right now, is not as solid as it needs to be,” Obama said in an interview that aired Wednesday on the “Tom Joyner Morning Show.”

The president’s comments amplify concerns from top Democrats about low black turnout in early voting, something they fear could cause a problem for Clinton, who is clinging to a narrow lead over Republican Donald Trump.

African-American turnout is down from four years ago in both North Carolina and Florida. The Clinton campaign is plotting a final-week blitz in both states, including two visits to each state by Obama. Black returns in early voting are also down in Ohio, where Obama rallied Democrats on Tuesday.

Observers have blamed the reduction on low voter enthusiasm and new restrictions on early voting. Obama acknowledged things are different for black voters without his name on the ballot, but he said the stakes are too high to let those problems get in the way.

First, I reported this over a week ago. Everyone is late to the party

Second, I predicted this over the summer. I predicted that Crooked ILLary would not get Obama's level of turnout. Also, I have cited and linked to many state polls showing Trump getting greater than 15% of the black vote.

Combine low black turnout with >15% support of blacks for Trump and you have DOOM for Crooked Hillary where the increased hispanic vote won't matter. They are panicking for good reason.

But, we are supposed to believe that 28% of republicans in Florida have already voted for Crooked Hillary. I guess it could happen, but I am very, very, very skeptical.

i predicted low black turnout too :)

Blacks better get that early voting accomplished, otherwise they'll never vote! I mean, we established early voting because they can't make it to the polls on election day.

Well, nobody is going to turn out blacks like Obama did. At least nobody white will lol.

I wonder how her numbers compare to past white contenders?

I thought it made it easier for progressives to squeeze voting in between Starbucks and hot yoga adventures

Well, no shit, morons. Lower black turnout for a white female than for a black male? There's a fucking shocker!

Link again. You have proven to be a chronic liar.

Racism AND sexism lol!!

What a fucking idiot you are. Avoiding reality.

In Utah, who the fuck do you think is in the majority? The Catholics?

When it comes to a black man running for President, who the fuck do you think blacks will identify with? Another black man or a rich Mormon?

Now, let's go back to the premise, idiot. Now that a black person (man or woman) is not on the ballot, why would you think (actually, you don't) the black turnout would be the same?

Yes...reading a lot into this. We might never see black turnout like we did for Obama. It was actually lower in '12, than in '08

But...automatically assuming white turnout favors Trump is silly. Educated Whites overwhelmingly support Clinton.
