At the close of Saturday's "Real Time," Bill Maher made the case for legalizing marijuana to be the next big civil rights issue, following in the footsteps of gay marriage.

As Maher explained, proponents of legalization have to demand that it be accepted, much like the LGBT community did with gay marriage. He even suggested that there's some political capital to be gained in doing so: "If Republicans were smart, they would steal marijuana from the Democrats as a freedom issue. Of course they're not smart so they won't."

Maher went on to refer to President Obama as our "first pothead president," questioning his leadership on drugs given that he's joked about smoking pot as a young man.

"If anyone can say 'smoking pot won't ruin your life,' it's the guy who smoked bales of it and then became the leader of the free world."

According to one of your liberal members in Seattle, here is the next big civil rights issue for you liberals.

Douglas Spink, 42, a convicted drug-runner and unapologetic advocate of zoophilia — sex between animals and humans — was warned by a federal judge on Friday that he’s flirting with violating the conditions of his prison release by having others post comments on the Internet on his behalf.

One of Spink’s attorneys, James Turner, of Bellingham, said his client believes that the controversy surrounding human-animal sex is shaping up to be the “civil-rights fight of the 21st century, much like gay rights.”

I saw the clip .. very funny .. and very telling.

A lot more people should be taking Obama to task for this one. An obvious failure to lead.

Mayor Bloomberg says that "medical marijuana" is one of the biggest hoaxes going. I agree.

It isn't a hoax .. and fuck Bloomberg.

To suggest that there are no medical applications for marijuana is stupid.

The fact that many want access to it free of criminal prosecution to soothe whatever ails them is a far better course than reaching for the legal bottle of alcohol.

That's a pretty strange stance you have for someone who's always railing on the government about how much they should stay out of our lives.

Ease up. I haven't taken a stance on legal marijuana one way or the other. So please extend me the courtesy of not presuming what I think on the matter based on one stated conclusion.

I have not made a decision on the issue of legalizing marijuana, but I have reviewed the evidence with regards to medicinal purposes and there is none. It has been shrewdly used as a foil to push for legalization.

Even if I were to support legalizing marijuana, I would still find the evidence supporting medicinal use lacking and dubious.

As it stands today I don't support the federal gobblement being involved so I am very consistent in my views. It is the big government types who are inconsistent in my opinion.

There is zero doubt that herb gives well being feeling, jailing a depressed person for seeking this relief is rather Gestapo!

I'm responding to you calling it a hoax and claiming that it will lead to greater 'hoaxes'

I can't stand Bloomberg, he is so arrogant. Even when he's right on an issue (which he isn't on this), he's such a jerk that you wonder if you're not better off having him on the other side.

Pot is less harmful than beer, most conservative would agree prohibition was an utter failure!
Pot prohibition is a symbol of failed government.
