The latest NPR/PBSNewsHour/Marist Poll found:

Overall approval rating jumped to 47%, up 8 points from the NPR poll last month. Presidents don’t generally see much, if any bounce, out of a State of the Union address. Since 1978, there had only been six times when a president saw an approval rating improve 4 points or more following State of the Union addresses, according to the pollsters. Three of those bounces were for former President Bill Clinton.

The poll, conducted March 1-2 among 1,322 U.S. adults, found 47% of respondents approved of Biden, up from 39% last week.

The bump, recorded right after Biden’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday, is “unusual” for a president––NPR notes there have only been six instances since 1978 in which a president’s approval rating has gone up by more than four points after the speech.

The increase was largely thanks to Democrats and Independents—whose approval of Biden went up by 11 points and 10 points, respectively—but Republican support also rose from 6% to 10% between last week and this week.

The poll found 52% approved of Biden’s response to Ukraine—a notable increase over the 34% who said the same last week—including 89% of Democrats, 17% of Republicans and 48% of Independents.

As the Biden administration released a new strategy this week to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, 55% said they approve of his handling of the coronavirus, up eight points from last month.

Biden’s approval rating for his handling of the economy rose eight points to 45%."
