Beach Boys lead tributes to 'genius' Brian Wilson

From the Beach Boys FB page:"The world mourns a genius today, and we grieve for the loss of our cousin, our friend, and our partner in a great musical adventure. Brian Wilson wasn't just the heart of The Beach Boys—he was the soul of our sound. The melodies he dreamed up and the emotions he poured into every note changed the course of music forever. His unparalleled talent and unique spirit created the soundtrack of so many lives around the globe, including our own. Together, we gave the world the American dream of optimism, joy, and a sense of freedom—music that made people feel good, made them believe in summer and endless possibilities.

We are heartbroken by his passing. We will continue to cherish the timeless music we made together and the joy he brought to millions over the decades. And while we will miss him deeply, his legacy will live on through his songs and in our memories.

Our hearts go out to Brian's family and his loved ones during this difficult time."FB_IMG_1749718598428.jpg

It wasn't strictly speaking his song he did a rearrangement of it. Here is an earlier version by the Kingston Trio

It would hardly be classified as an obscure song. From Wiki.

The record peaked at number three in the U.S., number two in the UK, and topped the charts in several other countries. It was innovative for containing an elaborate a cappella vocal section not found in other pop music of the era, and it remains one of the group's biggest hits.[1]

In 2011, the Beach Boys' version of "Sloop John B" was ranked number 276 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".[2]

They were far more revolutionary than folks believe. Pet Sounds... Awesome album.

These guys are not my normal music genre, but I owned Pet Sounds on CD back in the day. I love the harmonies.

Carl Wilson was truly stupendous when he sang God Only Knows, he double tracked the lyrics with a major third apart, this use of counterpoint gave the song a special other worldliness. The fact that Carl was a heavy smoker was even more remarkable considering the purity of his voice. Sadly he died in his early fifties from lung cancer.
