WASHINGTON - Two days before Congress was set to formalize President-elect Joe Biden's victory, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund was growing worried about the size of the pro-Trump crowds expected to stream into the District of Columbia in protest.

To be on the safe side, Sund asked House and Senate security officials for permission to request that the D.C. National Guard be placed on standby in case he needed quick backup.

But, Sund said Sunday, they turned him down.

Yes, Washington D.C. is not a state and does not have it's own National Guard. The permissions are granted through the WHITE HOUSE!

The WHITE HOUSE turned down the chief's request! DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn right it could have.

Easily. They held off leftists *for days* over the summer during one of the countless and destructive BLM/Antifa mostly peaceful protests. And they couldn’t secure the Capitol for several hours? Really?

I’m surprised there aren’t conspiracy theories over it.

The US Capitol Police refused to accept help from the FBI and National Guard before President Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol, according to a report.

The Pentagon offered Sunday to send guardsmen to help secure the perimeter and the Justice Department offered FBI help on Wednesday as the mob arrived, according to The Associated Press. Both offers were rejected.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said that as the rioting was underway, it became clear that the Capitol Police were overrun. But he said there was no contingency planning done in advance for what forces could do in case of a problem at the Capitol because Defense Department help was turned down.

What should we infer from that? That the Capitol Police or Capitol security officials didn't want to keep the Trump mob out?

Looks like we may get some interesting insights when this is fully investigated - as it will be.

But unlike the States, it is under the control of the White House, needs the White House to move

The Mayor asked that the Guard be ready beforehand and they mobilized, but until the White House gives the order, which they didn't till after the fact, the Guard can put their boots on the ground

And, yes, DC does have a National Guard unit.

BTW, the president delegated command authority for the DC National Guard to Defense officials in 1949.

No, it isn't, and no, it didn't, Anchovies.

By statute, the District Guard is subordinate solely to the president of the United States. Authority to activate the District Guard has been delegated, by the president, to the Secretary of Defense and further delegated to the Secretary of the Army.

Which validates exactly what I noted, it needs the White House's approval to hit the bricks, or as you quoted, "the District Guard is subordinate solely to the president of the United States"

My 11-year old niece (who reading and comprehension skills apparently are far superior to yours) says that OP states that "House and Senate security officials" turned down the request.

When she clicked on the hyperlink, she saw this: "House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving said he was not comfortable with the "optics" of formally declaring an emergency before the demonstration, Sund said. Meanwhile, Senate Sergeant at Arms Michael Stenger suggested that Sund informally seek his Guard contacts, asking them to "lean forward" and be on alert in case Capitol Police needed their help.

Irving could not be reached for comment. A cellphone number listed in his name has not accepted messages since Wednesday. Messages left at a residence he owns in Nevada were not immediately returned, and there was no answer Sunday evening at a D.C. apartment listed in his name. A neighbor said he had recently moved out.

Stenger declined Sunday to comment when a reporter visited his Virginia home. "I really don't want to talk about it," he said.

It was the first of six times Sund's request for help was rejected or delayed, he said. Two days later, on Wednesday afternoon, his forces in the midst of crisis, Sund said he pleaded for help five more times..."

.C. police had quickly dispatched hundreds of officers to the scene. But it was not enough. At 2:26 p.m., Sund said, he joined a conference call to the Pentagon to plead for additional backup.

"I am making an urgent, urgent immediate request for National Guard assistance," Sund recalled saying. "I have got to get boots on the ground."

On the call were several officials from the D.C. government, as well as officials from the Pentagon. The D.C. contingent was flabbergasted to hear a top Army official say he could not recommend that his boss, Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, approve the request.

"I don't like the visual of the National Guard standing a police line with the Capitol in the background," the official said, according to Sund and others on the call."

You are a special kind of stupid, Anchovies.

It says that the command authority for the DC National Guard was delegated to Defense officials.

Authority to activate the District Guard has been delegated, by the president, to the Secretary of Defense and further delegated to the Secretary of the Army.

The delegation of authority was authorized in 1949 by Harry Truman.

I haven't seen any proof. The President clearly lied about calling the National Guard- That fact has been established through White House sources. Trump turned down the original request according to White House staff, and for several other request attempts over several hours during the day.

The Secretary of Defense called the White House and advised the president that he needed to send in the National Guard at the Chief Of Congress Police request, and just before Dark, Trump made the call 5 minutes before his press conference and after the Capitol building had already been cleared..

THAT MAKES TRUMP THE DUNCE- not me.

Indeed, it could've been prevented by the President, but they were his traitors.

You didn't think he was going to send in troops to fight his very own insurrectionists, did you?

Look DC does not have a governor, that can initiate the action of calling up the National Guard. THAT PERMISSION HAS TO COME FROM THE WHITE HOUSE!

And Military advisors have already said, that Trump refused to give the order in the days ahead of the riot, is spite of getting the request!

Executive Order 10030 says you're wrong.

If the big words are too hard for you, my 11-year old niece can explain what they mean.

And Military advisors have already said, that Trump refused to give the order in the days ahead of the riot, is spite of getting the request!

Is that so?

Who told you that?

Hello, Lost Legion!

So it was "a top Army official" who refused to recommend National Guard assistance because "he didn't like the visual"?

There are 2000 Capitol police. On a day like that they should all have been on duty. Obviously they weren't.

As I said, this needs to be fully investigated. Questions need to be answered. But you can give them a hyperlink, so that's okay.
