Arizona could put convicted human smugglers to death

Associated PressThu Feb 13, 2014 12:27 PM

An Arizona legislative committee has approved a bill that would make human smugglers convicted of murder eligible for the death penalty.

The bill was proposed by Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles. According to state law, a person can only receive a death sentence if convicted of first-degree murder and jurors find at least one aggravating circumstance associated with the crime.

The bill broadens the list of aggravating circumstances to include the probability that the defendant is a threat to society and also recognizes smuggling as a serious offense.

Arizona currently lists 14 aggravating circumstances.

The bill was approved by the House Committee on Judiciary with a 7-1 vote on Thursday. Nobody spoke in opposition to it. The bill will move to a procedural committee before moving to the House.

I cant see the need of an aggrivating circumstance but if they do then fine, I have no issue with adding this. Of course my opinion makes no difference at all as I dont live there.
