Giffords, who was first elected in 2006, was hosting a “Congress on Your Corner” event at a supermarket when a man started shooting.

Twelve people were injured in the shooting shortly after 10 o’clock local time, according to Jason Ogan, a spokesman for the Pima Country Sherrif’s department. The police are sweeping the area for any other possible suspects and currently have one person in custody.

The Tuscon Citizen reported she was shot "point blank in the head." DNC Western States political director Ed Espinoza writes, "Giffords in hospital, condition unknown. Also shot was her district director and local press secretary."

Giffords was among the members who, POLITICO reported in March, faced threats and vandalism after the health care vote..."

I do not know what the shooters motivations were, I just know that they were crazy. Normal people don't shoot up a grocery store, no matter what their political beliefs.

This is just a very bad tragedy and my heart goes out to all their friends and family.
 
The suspect ran off and was tackled by a bystander. He was taken into custody. Witnesses described him as in his late teens or early 20s.
Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

Giffords was married to astronaut Mark Kelly, a veteran of Desert Storm. They have two children.

2:57 p.m. ET: Darci Slaten, spokeswoman at University Medical Center in Tucson, just told CNN that she can confirm Rep. Giffords was shot in the head and that she is in surgery now. Several other victims are also in surgery.

True, but even if the perpetrator is indeed associated with the Tea Party, it only demonstrates there are crazies in every political movement...
 
According to NBC News, one of those killed was a federal judge.

"Her father, Spencer Giffords, 75, when asked if the Congresswoman had any enemies replied, “The whole Tea Party.”...

Shooting people with an automatic weapon is not a friendly warning, surely you mean your warning and not the actual shooting? right? I just need some clarification on this, otherwise, we need an intervantion here. ;)
