"•Freedom. This deficit, in the UNDP's interpretation, explains many of the fundamental things that are wrong with the Arab world: the survival of absolute autocracies; the holding of bogus elections; confusion between the executive and the judiciary (the report points out the close linguistic link between the two in Arabic); constraints on the media and on civil society; and a patriarchal, intolerant, sometimes suffocating social environment.

The area is rich in all the outward trappings of democracy. Elections are held and human-rights conventions are signed. But the great wave of democratisation that has opened up so much of the world over the past 15 years seems to have left the Arabs untouched. Democracy is occasionally offered, but as a concession, not as a right."

===================

Once the arabs eradicate the supremist death cult of islam, they might be able to advance, but not before.

It was Erdogan the Turkish PM that famously quipped "Democracy is like a train; when you reach your destination, you get off."

That quote exemplifies why Muslim cultures struggle with democracy---it's only a means to an end. And the end is sharia law aka Islamic theocratic rule. It's played over and over in the whole region. It's why the Palestinians elected Hamas; it's why Egypt elected the Muslim Brotherhood; and it's why Turkey is teetering on the brink of theocracy under Erdogan.

My only disagreement is it has nothing to do ethnicity [the fact it involves predominantly Arabs] and everything to do with Islam. Had the founders been Muslim instead of predominantly Christian thinkers, Christians likely would be extinct in this country or living like Christians in the Muslim world.

Obama is wrong: Islam and Muslims had very little, if anything, to do with this country's historical heritage. And it's something we should all be grateful for.

^ well reasoned post. so called political Islam is on the rise, but then I don't see any inherent advantage in democracy
except it being the will of the people (more or less) -a benign dictatorship still gives a quality of life to it's people..

was the Arab Spring really more then just about Tunisia food riots?
Maybe for some places like Egypt where there was some desire by a relatively prosperous middle class.
But that notion was quickly disabused . el-Sisi provides security/stability ..

anyways it's none of the west's business, and Obama doesn't help like when he slapped on sanctions

And erdo and hamas are closely allied, so it is not surprising that hamas/PA have not had elections in over ten years - yet there are many cunts here and elsewhere who claim that it is Israel that is "undemocratic."

Your other statement about ethnicity is correct; it is islam - the cancerous death cult - that is the problem, not the people themselves. All humans are blank slates when born; they are turned into monstrosities by their parents/community/imams under the cloak of islam, and their societies are too corrupt and closedminded for enough people right now to stand up to this twisted mindset. I firmly believe that for mankind to evolve and survive, islam will need to be either massively reformed or eradicated, or we are going to see wars of unimaginable fury and consequence in the next 20-25 years.

Your last statement about obama is also perfectly true, and if there was a more telling example of how awful a president he has been, I've yet to see it. muslims had almost nothing to do with this country's formation, and it is along the lines of the lies that arab muslims consistently tell themselves about their own history to try and make themselves feel better about it, when that history has been nothing short of dreadful. The mountain of lies that emanate from the muslim world about the crusades, their treatment of jews and other minorities from the early middle ages forward, the events leading up to the wars with Israel, the arab-Israeli conflict, every utterance from the iranian cancerous, fake regime, etc. - all lies that serve one purpose - to support the totalitarian mindset of the followers of the death cult known as islam.
