If Lincoln hadn't would be an interesting discussion. Purely hypothetical, of course. Slavery was dying as an institution in civilized countries and I think it would have died out in the US within a few decades after Secession. We probably wouldn't have gone to war with Spain but the wars in Europe were a long time coming. With Secession, families were split up much like in Germany, Vietnam and Korea. I think a push for Reunification would have come about either by the turn of the century or shortly after it.

In that event, we'd probably have a new Constitution. How that would look would be very interesting indeed.

I completely agree he wasn't. Robert E. Lee was an honorable man who did the honorable thing: he defended his "country" from attack by a hostile invading force. General Lee was no traitor nor were any of the officers and men of the Confederate Army. Lincoln invaded the South and the South fought back.
