Two young men have been shot.
Both are 28 years old, and both have been badly wounded in the abdomen. The hospital where they have been brought for treatment, in this case Alameda County Medical Center, gives both excellent care, sparing no resources on either man.
According to a 2010 study published by the American College of Surgeons, uninsured patients were nearly twice as likely to die in the hospital after a gunshot trauma as insured patients. The research was conducted in Alameda County between 1998 and 2007, and looked at 2,164 victims of gun violence.
"Insurance coverage has a greater effect than expected," note the authors. "Despite similar injury severity, uninsured trauma patients were more likely to die after gunshot injury than insured patients."
