Sami Samir Hassoun Charged in Bomb Plot Outside Wrigley Field
Sami Samir Hassoun has been charged with one count of attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and one count of an attempted use of an explosive device, the FBI's Chicago office stated on Monday, according to NBC Chicago.
The 22-year-old Lebanese medical student, who considers Sept. 11 a "beautiful day" according to the article, is in custody after putting a backpack containing what he thought was an explosive device into a Wrigleyville trash can -- outside of Wrigley Field where the Cubs play -- in an attempt to cause chaos in the city of Chicago.
Officials stated that Hassoun's arrest came months after working with an informant and an undercover FBI agent. Hassoun, who moved to Chicago with his family a few years ago, reportedly had become increasingly unhappy with how the city was run.
Hassoun has fervently expressed interest in committing violent acts against the city in order to cause radical change. The criminal complaint in the article notes that Hassoun wanted to cause a "revolution" and "kill the nightlife" in Chicago.
In NBC's article, the FBI noted that Hassoun, "He claimed that he was trying to force enough embarrassment on the city of Chicago to cause Mayor Daley to resign."
Hassoun wanted to originally carry out the attack on Sept. 11, but instead chose the 18th in Wrigleyville during the night of a Dave Matthews Band concert, in order to create the most chaos and damage to the city.
Hassoun met with one of the agents on Saturday night and was given a backpack containing fake explosives by the official. Agents then watched Hassoun place the fake explosives into a trash container a block away from Wrigley Field. He was quickly arrested and the fake explosive was quickly recovered.
The FBI noted in the article that "at no time was the public in danger during this investigation."
Other acts Hassoun has reportedly wanted to take on, according to the report, were poisoning Lake Michigan, bombing the Willis Tower, assassinating Mayor Daley and attacking police officers.
If convicted, Hassoun will face five years to life in prison.
