Richard Blumenthal, the early favorite to win retiring fellow Democrat Christopher Dodd's Senate seat from Connecticut, never served in the military in Vietnam despite his public comments indicating he had done so, the New York Times reported on Monday.


If these revelations harm Blumenthal's campaign, they could help Republicans pick up a Senate seat now in Democratic hands as they try to gain control of Congress in November elections.

Sen. Ted Kennedy - Killed a woman and was one of the longest serving senators.

Rep Alcee Lamar Hastings - previously a federal judge, was impeached and removed from office for corruption and perjury. Has been a Representative from Florida since 1993.

A couple of examples, where character and honesty do not count when it comes to democrats.

Blumenthal says he's always tried to make it clear his Marine Reserve service never took him overseas. The Times reported he got five deferments to avoid going to war between 1965 and 1970.

Blumenthal told the Times he had misspoken at the 2008 event in Norfolk in which he said he served in Vietnam.

In a televised March debate, Blumenthal stated clearly he had not served in Vietnam.

translation.... 'I was bragging about having served in Viet Nam right up until the point that someone noticed I hadn't. Then I said that I 'misspoke' and didn't really serve.'

Requests are coming in that Blumenthal be investigated under the 2005 federal Stolen Valor Act, a statute that attempts to criminalize the making of false claims about military service and medals.
