LOL.... we are hardly taking the same path the Soviets took in Afghanistan. The entire country was against the Soviets. Whereas right now the country is primarily against the Taliban return to power. Though I do agree that they want us out, the goals of the US and the Soviets are not comparable.

That said, Afghanistan was indeed one of the catalysts that brought the Soviets down. The Polish uprising and the Hungarian revolt were also key components that signed the death certificate of the old USSR. The Pope, Thatcher and Reagan all played a part, as did Gorbachev... but the Soviet retreat in early 89 did indeed boost confidence in the eastern European countries to stand up to their Soviet masters.
