California Rep. Barbara Lee and other House Democrats have introduced a bill that would establish a Department of Peacebuilding, which would be responsible for tasks from scaling back U.S. military actions to gang violence to school bullying.

The new department would be led by a Cabinet-level Secretary of Peacebuilding, who would have a seat on the National Security Council, The Hill reports. The department would be “dedicated to peacebuilding, peacemaking, and the study and promotion of conditions conducive to both domestic and international peace and a culture of peace.”

The legislation would have the department create a “peace academy,” and the secretary would create “Peace Days,” encouraging people to “observe and celebrate the blessings of peace and endeavor to create peace on Peace Days.”

Imagine that. Peace actually being given a place in the U.S. government.

If you think that peace given a place in our government is enforcing a police police state your totally screwed in the head and have no idea of what Orwell was saying in the book 1984.

So what exactly would they do? Have a peace-in at the Amsterdam Hilton and invite the world's media.

I wonder when you right wingers will finally get it that creating peace is not possibly through means of violence. of course I know the right wingers are not interested in peace. They wish to continue war to fill their own bank accounts and have no care over who gets hurt by it.

Try to make your cliches more interesting. Left/right they both profit on the war machine

Yes the Democrats are also responsible. That's why I vote Green party. Every one on in the left was hoping that this president would reverse everything that Bush did. Instead he only increases and adds to the problem. I am very glad I didnt vote for him,but Im sure as hell not going to start voting republican over it.They would instate a full on police state.

Newspeak - It is like calling the leader of the most aggressive military in the world, the Secretary of Defense.

I fear that the Secretary of Peace will have the boot of government on people's throats to enforce that peace.

This, as a whole, would be a horrible idea.

^^Sounds like they'd just bully the bullies. hang on. South Park has you covered.^^

Imagine this country turning away from peace through threat. Oh, the humanity.

Peacebuilding is cost effective: By promoting effective violence prevention policies and programs, we help decrease the federal deficit and channel funds toward positive change.

Root Cause:
This bill addresses and corrects the underlying, systemic causes of violence and cultivates conditions for peace.

Violence is costly.
A recent report from the Institute for Economics and Peace estimates that in the U.S., annual violence containment costs around $2.16 trillion dollars, money that could go to schools, and myriad social justice initiatives.

History making:
All great social change, from women’s suffrage to civil rights, although taking time and commitment, ultimately created sweeping, positive shifts benefiting all humanity.

I always thought "Operation Iraqui freedom" and "enduring freedom" as well as "The Department of Homeland Security", "No Child Left Behind" and especally "The Patirot Act" were all very Orwellian.
